Yea, this 62 is going to be a big project for somone who is in high school with zero experience.

I did this in high school with almost zero prior mechanical experience
 
if looking at a parts gas 60, you should look for a 1985-1987, for ease of swapping stuff into the 62 series
 
4/85 through 8/87 specifically, with the spacer between the 4-speed and transfer case.
What was the change that happened making the spacer necessary?
 
That's when Toyota introduced the H55f in non-US markets, it's longer by the same amount as the spacer.
Oh right. That makes sense. I knew about the change but never really understood the driver.

also the trans hump changed to a 5 sided design from a 4 sided design, the 5 sided is a direct bolt in to the 62 series, along with that the boots and clamps changed to match
the seat brackets changed
the PS box changed bolt pattern
the smaller ujoint on the steering shaft
and probably some other little things I'm forgetting about
