Today was our first trip out in the 80. Only mod performance wise is the OME Med kit. Lift was put on last night. Still on stock 270/75 (I think thats right) BFG ATs.

Put a nice dent in a rear bumper corner, cracked the paint and plastic on a front bumper corner, have lots of pinstriping I hope mostly comes off and....got a nail in a tire on the way home.

Im gonna try and get the tire patched tommorow. Im afraid it's too close to the tread edge to be patched though.

The 80 did quite well. Only got stuck twice. First was on a soft hill where the front axle was hanging up and plowing dirt. Bigger, more aggressive tires would have helped on that one. The second was on 180 degree turn on the trail. The 80 just doesnt turn sharp enough and I got hung up trying to make a multi point turn. I knew it would be tough when a Cherokee almost got hung up, the 80 was a little too long.

Sure was nice to turn the diff lock knob when the going got tough and others were having to back down or skinny pedal thru stuff.

Truck ran great. My only questions are these. Is it okay to use the CDL button while moving? Ive done the pin 7 mod. I was coming to a complete stop when pushing the button in HI. Is that neccesary or can I keep moving slowly (5-10mph)?

The other is my Scangauge was showing coolant temps of 190-205 degrees while on the trail? Is that a normal range? Outside air temps were in the mid to upper 80s.

The CDL will only engage when everything is lined up right. I frequently engage the CDL when moving slowly in traffic just to exercise it. It has definitely kicked in while I was going 10mph at least, so no need to stop completely to engage it.

Looks like you had a fun day out on the trails. As per your temperature question, I think you're in the normal range and not near overheating at least. I have pushed my truck to 217 degrees climbing a steep pass in Wyoming with 5 grown men in the truck as well as all of our fishing gear, and although I was pushing it, the A/C never cut out (which happens at 223 ish degrees I think). Considering you were probably crawling all day those temps aren't out of the normal range.

CDL ? Yep, at slow speed is fine.
Temp? Yep, seems normal.

Grain of Salt? Your 80 will most likley be able to out perform the driver. Locked or Un-lock these are amazing creatures, but just because its a amazing beast doesnt mean it will drive for you.

Hone your driving skills with the beast you own and :steer: ;)

:grinpimp:

just my .02

PS: you get used the custom pinstriping after a few..... :flipoff2:

Does sound like you broke her in right!

No need to stop or slow right down to engage CDL. Even useing it to engage front drive in a part time converted cruiser it engages without problems up to 80km/h.

Hey Bart, I see the Eglin curse is still around. If there is ever body damage out there it seems to be on a 80...thats nothing too bad though, just an excuse to get a new rear bumper....and maybe tires.
Most of that pinstriping will buff out for sure. Temp seems fine and as others said its OK to lock center diff while moving. BTW your lift looks good, see you next weekend.

Nice to know about the temp being normal. Most of the day it was around 200 degrees give or take 5 degrees. Around town I see 190-195. The A/C ran all day without cutting out. At times it wasnt cold just cool though. But it was hot out and the 80 has alot of glass. The coolant is still good and pretty fresh(Toyota red). I may swap to the Blue clutch and thicker fluid as insurance for our summer heat.

As for driving it, I just need to learn it. I could take the FJ we had wherever I wanted due to knowing it so well. Ill get to that point with this truck after a few more trips. Eventually Ill go bigger with the lift and tires, but not till I know it and can drive it better.

Still had a great time. I like driving this one more than the FJ Cruiser. It was also the first time taking the Lab puppy with us and she had a blast with all the attention and playing in the creek.

As I put on the Jeep club forum, the 80 is a big truck on small trails. Especially compared to Wranglers and Cherokees. I figure Ill keep bashing bumpers till I need new ones and buy steel ones then.

You got yourself one of the best 4x4s ever made. I am glad to see you treated her just the way she wants to be treated!

Pinstripes rule!

Glad to hear you got out there!

Remember each stripe adds 1hp ;)
