Oman middle east 2 year assignment
I 'd like to say hi and introduce myself and my new adoption:cheers:

My family and I spent the last three years in the US with a Disco 2..and a a jeept TJ ( never drove home from the trail) in Houston CO and the last year in CA

I know shame on me....I was reasonably happy but fed up with ABS issues crappy seals, leaks, and general decomposision of all the plastic components under the hood for the LR

and being towed home after every trip in the TJ...well no explanation required.

Offroad I was happy with a 4 " lift and 33's...on both

However I felt the need to convert.....Toyo

So here's to introduce my new goat herders RJ77 in Oman where I've just moved too.

Its a 1993 model RJ 77 with a 22R engine

with a leaky carb, a worrying tak, tak, tak on start up, well bad steering, crap chinese battery,
bad front bearing on the transfer case that my Indian mechanic say's is impossible to remove, a non functioning temp gauge, intermittant lights horn and emergency lights
lots of baling wire holding on various parts, worn seats, non working radio casset, no ariel, slow starter......but

NO LEAKS.......who hooooooo and no ABS

666 is part of the serial No....so i guess its name should be the beast.....well maybe after some mods....right now its more

The Goat, which may very well stick along with the smell

I have a whole bunch of questions and am spending most nights
trying to find manuals and info on the truck and its systems..

First big one...re the tak tak tak engine...before I spend a bunch of money tracking down the issue..

What 6 cylinder engines would be a good transplant ?

and would I need to to change gear box and transfer case too ?

the second hand car part market here is pretty busy....

camel impacts mean instant right offs....

The pictures make it look quite nice...the matt white paint obviously inhances its photogenics....

even though almost all panels have an over spray of some non vehiclular odd white paint

here 2 months and awaiting my tools to get started......:wrench:

any info is apreciated :steer:

as the local internet is pretty restictive and lacks.....just about anything........even references to bacon are restricted

stick anothe gasser in or rebuild that one... they are cheap to rebuild.

a PZJ shares the same tranny so that might be the easiest install...

Hi and welcome to the forum.

First off ,I would get a new mechanic. There are no non removeable bearings in the t/case:D
But you would have to remove the t/case to get to all of them.
The body on yours is the same as any other 7* series from the firewall back.
At the top of the forum there are stickys with online manual downloads.
The 84-90 body chassis manual will help with that side of things
I think there is an R engine manual in there too,it is also used in the Hilux .

The front is the same as all the light duty 7* series SWB built from 85 on.
Putting a 6 cyl in is not worth the effort unless you have the place and time to do it.

The 6 cyl models have a longer front ,about 4 inches I think, and the bonnet slopes down more to meet the grill. Have a close look at a 6 cyl model if you can.

Is your gearbox a 5 sp?
A gearbox swap would be needed.Maybe the existing box can be used but its another headache.
The easiest way is to swap the whole front from a 6 cyl model
I would look around for a later model R engine with EFI or just patch it up and live with it.
By the time you got it perfected including fixing the existing problems ,your 2 year stint would be nearly over.

I thought Oman would have a good range of Landcruisers to choose from.
A FJ7* model is probably the easiest one to find. It uses a lot of petrol with its old fashioned petrol 6 cyl but if its cheap...
Other 6 cyl models are FZJ7* ,HJ7* and HZJ7* (the latter 2 are probably not available in big numbers in your area, but the FZJ70 is;))
The 1st 1 or 2 letters hint at the engine type, the J is for landcruiser,7 is for the series and the final number can mean many things but usually the length, SWB,LWB etc.(the 77 is a LWB)

Stay in touch;)

"I thought Oman would have a good range of Landcruisers to choose from"

They are the most popular vehicle around.....but hardly ever for sale as they get handed round the family, then end up at the families farm out in the sticks

The ones for sale are very expencive 1997 80 series with 380,000 km are almost as much as a late
2003 105 series base model

Not sure my front is that much diferent than a 6 cylinder one, as my fan cowl has an at least 6" extension to reach the 4 pot motor.

labour here is cheap....however quality is questionable.....

labour on a V8 head gasket change was only $ 120 and that was two mechanics working at the same time

Im sure you know better then.

the front clip fof the HD 4/5/6 cyl engines are the HD designed metal shape...
yours is the light duty front which will not be deep enough to install the HD engiens in (comfortably), it can be done but it is tight...

Okydoky...no 6 cylinder then,

just looks the same as others running around here with the 4500 EFI stickers on the side...I'll have to take a measure when I see one parked

"First off ,I would get a new mechanic. There are no non removeable bearings in the t/case

Its the front one ....so it should be an in the car removal, but I guess he did'nt want to use too much force.

My container and tools arrive in two weeks...so the rumble will have to do till then when my big hammers arrive 8-)

Steering...well bearings are done and fine......however the wobble is still there, looks like a bad steering box or lower UJ on the steering shaft....as the bottom of the shaft is loose and movable where it enters under the plastic shield.

new battery purchased.....old batteries terminal came off during removal, had to cut the terminal to get the starter wire loose......and broke one of the dash live feed wires...went to buy a new connector..only to find my vehicle does not have one.......so some investigation is required there as it looks to be OEM

Also found a black box under the carpet on the passenger side not sure what that does either....probably conected to the odd loop of fuel hose and a directional sensor under the hood
which seemingly has no home on the vehicle either

yep downloaded a few manuals, good resource thanks

Found and changed temp sender...no luck..so today got a new gauge module...probably at the weekend I'll fit that

Not so!

I've compared my PZJ 77 (1991) with 73, 74, and 78s. the body is SLIGHTLY different in all aspects: doors slightly different due to the 4 doors, back windows are unique, and the rear doors are longer to meet the bumper. Fenders at the front are different as is the hood, but these can be swapped into 73/74 series parts complete. . .

the 77 body is unique but the firewall back is a direct replacement for a 78...

Yeah ,Iknow. I should have added there are 2 basic body types in the HD 7*
Basically you can separate them into the fold down windscreen type and non fold down type

BUT the 77/78 is different for the fold down and normal hard top versions...

Are you saying there is a fold down 78 series in the HD models or are you talking about LD versions?
I was only referring to the HD models.

as pointed out earlier the HD 77 version is different from the fold down or the hard top versions. frotn doors are different, rear doors obviously, the rear doors might be (never checked) but the HD77 and the LD78 firewall back sheet metal are interchangable...

I see what you mean now. The top of the VDJ76 front door is the same around the roof but its different around the bottom to close up the gap between that and the rear side door .
The smaller door parts appear interchangeable with the the older model,98-07

i have a chance to take a 4 door 78, chop the back off behind the doors, extend the frame on a 75 and make a 4 door 75..
but is it really worth the effort?

Why would you need to extend the 75 frame? Or is it the only way it will fit the 4dr body around the rear axle.
I only ask because the 75 dual cabs here use the standard frame.

yes but the aftermarket and factory 4 door 75 series have a raised back floor... the 78 series doesn't and the 77/78 series wheel base is 2730mm where as the 75 series is (damn i can't find the specs) shorter...
