Just thought I'd share what I did to mount a fire extinguisher in my rig. I don't anticipate ever needing it, and hope I never will, but I'd rather have it and not need it yadda yadda yadda...

I had to drill the bracket so that the holes would match up with the nuts in the A-pillar, but going this way allows me to mount it somewhere else in the future if need be and simply put a grab handle back up in its place. I like this because should the need ever arise for me to grab it quick, all I've got to do is reach over, snap the latch and grab it. No needing to reach behind me or towards the floor or anything. Only thing I'm really concerned about is someone not paying attention, leaning forward when they get in and cracking their forehead against the handle. I can't twist it around becaue the handle would hit the windshield.

Also, it was free. The fire department here on base pretty much gives them away for home use, and a buddy of mine there hooked me up with one small enough to put in a vehicle. IIRC, it's dry chem, which is MUCH safer than halon.

I purchased a grab handle from cruiserparts.net....they said it would thread into nuts on a pillar.... I have a 60 didn't see any mounting holes...these are what you used for the bracket are they only on 62's ordid I just miss it

That's a pretty awesome place to mount it. Does it restrict your vision that much?

From what I've heard, all 60 series Cruisers have the holes, but I haven't found any real trend with the nuts being there. Some 60s have the nuts and some don't, and some 62s have the nuts and some don't. I used a small scribe to feel for threads before puncturing my headliner fabric to mount the bracket.

All you gotta do is make friends with someone in a fire department and they'll hook you up. It's much safer (and cheaper) for them to give out a fire extinguisher than to respond to a raging inferno. Just don't mention it's for your truck :D

GLTH, from the position my head sits at with these Mazda seats and the way I sit, it lines up perfectly with the A pillar in my vision, so I've got no restrictions from it. If it were larger, then I'd have issues.

I hope you issue a full face helmet to the poor sapper who rides shotgun with you. It will do wonders for keeping the handle of that extinguisher from impaling your passenger's forehead during a panic stop or front end collision.

Might think about wearing one yourself...in the event you get t-boned hard on the passenger side, be prepared for that extinguisher to become a flying projectile, putting you squarely in it's flight path.

Careful there, you could put an eye out with that thing....

I'm not worried about it coming off of the bracket. These were designed to survive plane crashes.

It sits clear off to the side, and it's hard to tell by the pic, but it's turned so the handle isn't pointed straight back, so I'm not concerned about panic stops or getting rear-ended. Given the angle it's sitting at, I AM concerned about how close peoples' heads are going to come to it when they're getting in/out so I'll be keeping a close eye on that for a while. I don't wheel hard enough to be concerned about rollovers on a trail, and if I get hit hard enough to roll on the road, I think the extinguisher is gonna be the least of my worries...

Word.

I'm all for keeping a fire extinguisher handy but I too think that's a dangerous place to mount one.

Mine is under the drivers seat bungeed in with the tool bag. It might not be the most accessable place but as long as the driver door will open, its an easy grab.

FWIW:
i like it. i too think the placement is a little questionable, but as far as accessibilty goes, you can't beat it. have you ever seen that rubber stuff that you can dip the handle of hand tools into? i forget what it's called but you can pick it up at just about any hardware store. might be a good idea for the ends of that extinguisher to eliminate sharp edges. just make sure it won't hinder the performance of the extinguisher. now all you need is a military issue folding shovel for the drivers side and a big smokey the bear painted on the hood. that would be a cool government rig.

No offense, but I have the same fire extinguisher and the bracket has popped open a couple of times, maybe after years of vibration....

Also, you've talked about going SOA. If that's the case, you'll need to move that fire extinguisher out of there and put the opposite side grab handle on, passengers will need it to get in and out of the truck.

Personally, I think there are better locations for it. I have two in the truck right now, one mounted to the floor right in front of the passenger seat, another one in the rear cargo area that's more intended to use at a campsite.

Just my $0.02...

Not trying to s*** in your Wheaties, but I wouldnt trust that latch. Good plan to protect your truck, possible bad plan in an accident.

Dont trust that bracket!!!! that is a household bracket not an automotive bracket. I use the same 2 1/2 can in my race car (as a back up to the flame out system) Several companies make bitchen high quality brackets for them.

Alright, the hunt is back on to find a new mounting location. Though of the back of my Tuffy, but then the bottom portion of the rear seat won't have enough room to come forward (and someone could kick it). Passenger side kick panel, same issue with kicking. Also with mounting it along the side of the tranny hump (like they have in alot of the government trucks here on base). I could try to mount it center on the tranny hump, but more'n likely I'll have to relocate it again to make space for the NV4500's shifter. The way my seat brackets are designed, I could perfectly fit the extinguisher on the forward bar just underneath the front of the passenger seat, but I'd need about 1/4" more clearance to allow for seat travel on the tracks.

AGGRAVATING

Why not in the rear cargo area? If your truck catches fire, the first order of business will be to get out of the truck.

I was thinking to mount it to the left of the drivers seat to the floor... right between the seat and the door.

juat a thought

On a stock 60 (pre 85), an extinguisher fits really well horizontally on the raised sheetmetal in front of the seat- either driver or passenger. I guess perhaps your seats are preventing that location?

what about mounting it on the C pillar, low enough that people won't hit their heads on it when seated there? Not the best for access from the driver's seat.

What about below the glove box? You could snug it up in there pretty deep, helping keep it out of the passenger's foot space.

Would've worked when I had stock seats, but the ones I have now are way wider and don't allow for much mounting space.
