I'm in the middle of a timing belt and water pump job on my 2007 100 and I'm second guessing myself. I have a tube of black FIPG from my 80, so I assumed I had what I needed before I pulled everything apart. When reading the FSM when it was time to put it all back together, I noticed that there is more than one black FIPG and I have the wrong one.

FSM calls for 08826-00100 or equivalent. From some diligent searching, it seems like this is a different beast than the 00295-00103 FIPG I have. Nearest I can tell is that the older -00103 FIPG (actually Toyota Seal Packaging 102) is for oil, whereas the -00100 FIPG is ThreeBond 1282B sealant that is supposedly made specifically for the LL and SLL coolants.

All my local buddies are split on what to do. Seems like my options are:

1. Use what I have (the 00295-00103 FIPG) and let it cure a little longer. Not sure if this qualifies as "or equivalent" to the other FIPG. No consensus online. I'm leaning here, just to get it done, but don't want to have the SLL coolant start eating away at the wrong stuff.

2. Wait until Toyota can get me a tube of the über expensive 08826-00100 FIPG next week. Not a great option, as I need to go to work on Monday.

3. Go to the auto parts store and buy something else that meets the FSM "or equivalent" status. Permatex Right Stuff seems to get good reviews for this, but I'm open to suggestions.

Anybody really know the difference in the two black FIPGs?

When I did mine last year, I opted to go with the Permatex water pump and thermostat fipg. I had other stuff in the garage, but was concerned it would breakdown under extended exposure to coolant and high temps (not sure if that's a legit concern). It worked as expected and I wouldn't hesitate using it again next time around.

What I didn't plan for was the 24 hour cure time.

use what you have, the 00103 tube will work with coolant but it can degrade over time (think a few years time, not really an issue). The new stuff 00100 is a silicone based fipg for coolant only. use what you have and let it dry before refilling the cooling system

Yeah, $80+ per tube for the correct Toyota stuff. I'm sure it's great, but that's a little nuts for the small amount I'd need for this job.

I can wait until tomorrow to fill it back up if I can get it all buttoned up today. In the rain. Lots and lots of rain.

Thanks for the replies.

I found this Toyota Adhesive & Sealant cross reference over on Yotatech- might be helpful- but TB 1282 doesn't seem to be available anywhere I've looked.

Also here is TDS info from threebond on the different gasket makers and sealants. On page 3 & 4 Looks like the 1207B series would be coolant compatible FIPG. On pg 4 make note of the different reaction types. series1100_1200_EN

Can the coolant FIPG tube be used on the pulley bolt since it’ll be exposed to oil?

Looks like the aisin brand covers oil and coolant.
