So after much cajoling from my Brother Kling-on, I'm finally starting a build thread on the FJ 40 with a Chevy 305ho that he gave me:

Here is the obligatory before photo:

roundup_11.sized.jpg

Today I built some Kick panel mounts for speakers for the Fj40,

First i laid out a paper template in Adobe Illustrator.. If folks want it I can export it as a PDF, it fits on 2 pieces of legal sized paper. Taped it up cut it out and did test fitting and adjusting with that...

2012-03-25_20-54-39_853.jpg

Then i cut two of them out of some 1/4" abs i had laying around, and cut them out, then using a strip heater that i built out of plywood uchannel and some stainless wire + my car battery charger (i can post pics, if anyone wants to see it's stupid simple) and put 2 90deg bend in it for stiffness, I could have just as easily used metal and a brake to bend it, but my brake hasn't arrived yet and I was impatient, yet i wanted it to look nicer than hammering over the edge of the anvil.

Tomorrow I'm going to run get some self tapping screws and affix them down.

Here are some pics if one propped in place so you can see how they look: (with crappy phone pics)

Refreshed the speedo (Clean and paint needle orange again) and replaced a bad Oil pressure gauge(yes I know it crooked I'll get it next time I'm in there) added reflectors and EL-wire to make the speedo more visible at night. (i need to get a darkness pic)

Swapping all the lights (except one I missed) to LEDs, and fixing several electrical gremlins...

Converting the factory choke cable to a throttle cable,

And swapping out the Choke cable for one that was long enough to work correctly.

wiring up teh relays and switches to make the lights on the bumper work as they were non functional bling when i got it

Oh and Joel/Kling-On gave me a Grey Kayline/STC style soft top to go on it too.. I"ll try to get a pic of that from Katemcy last weekend, from Joel...

Well that catches e up to today, I'll start adding stuff as i do it.. I've got lots of other hobby's so i expect the progress to be slow.. :)

Having fun though!

Thanks Caladin/Eric

REAL DAY ONE PICS

Custom Audio sounds... is the suck...

So I entitle this Photo, why to never buy a product from custom auto sounds to go in an FJ-40... (or any other classic car)

2012-05-12_23-29-36_461.jpg

As it turns out it's just a DIN radio, with a new face plate, so it does not actually FIT in say a classic car, unless you disassemble a bunch of stuff to put it in thereby forcing it to have to be done again if you ever want to work on it....

So there's a couple hours and around $200 down the drain... I guess I'll be chucking it in the trash...

Chalk that one up to a learning lesson, i just assumed since it was designed to go in classic cars without cutting the dash that it would say.. fit into a un cut dash...

Don't chunk it yet can't you put it in from behind ??? Or does your still have the factory side arms

Cant you just remove the heated duct and put it in from behind ??? If the side mounts are there cut em off and save them. Dont cut the dash face but the stock radio tabs are ok

I actually was able to get them to let me return it, even though I swapped out all the electrical connectors
so I'm getting one that i can see will fit. I might have to make a new bezel but that's easy stuff...

Edits:
For future reference i got this one and it fit great and looks awesome, got the AMC/Jeep style knobs that look perfect.

With Knobs

Th PO made this plate and drilled tiny screw holes in all 4 corners so i just modified the face plat e to work and lost a screw.. :)

Once you accept the holes, which i did a long time ago, i think it looks pretty good!

If i had it all to do over I'd get the one with the usb port, just to have it if i needed it at some point in the future. (which I now do :p )

It looks like at least the right side radio shaft mount tab is there. If the left is there, you're golden.

Patches

I got the new radio in, and today i started patching the Driver side fender. I'm not much of a welder, or body man...

and it turn out it's really hard to weld upside down... :) so the bottom edge kinda sucks.

Looking good keep it up ... Grandpa has a package coming to you ;)

She's been sitting a couple years while i took care of more important things like paying off credit cards...
Finally getting back to her, the rear pinon bearing is shot, so i'm pulling things apart, got it up on stilts and
getgin stuck into tearing down the rear diff...
