I’d like to replace the FD cable on my 65 with one in a better shape but couldn’t figure out how to take it apart in the engine bay. I tend to break things the first time I attempt to take them apart so trying to avoid that. It looks like this:

Pretty sure it has to be taken out at the end first, then pulled out, then unbolted from dash. I’m stuck in the first step. Thanks for the help.

Yes, meant to post earlier, you have to disassemble the change valve unit to get access to pop the cable out of the keeper. I did mine with the unit removed from the truck, easy to get to the screws on the backside then. You can see two of those screws in your pic. GL.

Thanks, is there any seal/gasket or diaphragm in there that I need to watch out for?

I wish I had taken pics so I could remember more of the internals 😂 but from what I recall there wasn’t anything too critical to be cautious over. I think there is a gasket between the two sections, just go slow pulling them apart. Wish I could remember more.

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot.

For anyone doing this in the future: the change valve should be taken apart from two side, one side is held by the screws @middlecalf showed above, and then the side held to the bracket by bolts. Then you’ll see the cable being held by a small screw. The valve is mechanical, pull it away to get more access to the screw

I had to cut one vacuum line to be able to get access. Also I messed up the firewall grommet, and also a grommet for the vent on top of the change valve, they were both very hard. Luckily I have a grommet kit.

And finally I have a shiny FD knob and cable. Such a simple thing but took me 2 hours to do 😓

Here is my old cable, looks like PO had fixed it, held up pretty good.

Excellent! And 👍 on the tech documentation!
