Summer is coming and I want to bring my BJ73's cooling system up to "perfect"... but I have a bit of a part number mystery.

EPC says the fan for a 12/1984 JPN BJ73 is 16361-38010, which is a 380mm 7-blade fan. This fan is super common and very available... but the problem is that it doesn't fit on my current fan clutch.

My current fan (and the clutch to go with it) is a 7-blade 410mm fan. Its missing a blade and has damage on the remaining blades from contacting the shroud, probably because its bigger than stock. As far as I can tell BJ60's and 80-series used a 410mm fan, so its probably a swap from one of them.

Would you:

a) Stick with the 410mm setup and just get a new fan and ignore the occasional shroud strike?

or...

b) Replace both the fan and clutch with the stock stuff?

The wrench in plan "b" is that the EPC says my clutch should be 16210-56040, which is no longer available. Also its apparently pretty uncommon as Aisin doesn't have a cross ref for it listed.

I looked for other applications that used the 380mm 16361-38010 fan and apparently all of these clutches will fit that fan and I think the water pump flange is the same on all of them:

Code:
16210-38050 (5/82 5F w/o PS)
    OEM available $105
    a.k.a. Aisin FCT-001
16210-58030 (10/89 14B, 5/95 15BF)
    OEM discontinued
    a.k.a. Aisin FCT-033
16210-56020 (2/79 2B, 8/80 3B)
    OEM discontinued
    a.k.a. Aisin FCD-004 or FCT-061
16210-56060 (1/85 11B, 8/85 13B)
    OEM discontinued
    no Aisin xref
16210-35010 (5/82 5F)
    OEM discontinued
    no Aisin xref

Sooo... which of those would you guys use? Do you think it matters?

Surprised it doesnt bolt up, how far off is it? Not sure on the size, but my 13BT uses the same fan as many hilux's, which is what I got a spare from. The fan clutch, i'm using a 3F fan clutch, bolted up no issue, I assumed many toyota ones were the same.

Any of the clutches seem to bolt up at the water pump side. But where the clutch-to-fan interface is very different.

Your BJ74 uses the large 410mm fan anyway.

Look at this webpage: http://www.kopex.com.tw/autoparts/fanblades/toyota4.htm

Take some of that with a grain of salt, some of the OEM numbers are not pulling up the fan they describe. But either way, I thought I could find a less than 410mm fan to fit an FJ60 fan clutch so I could run it in my 1F equipped FJ40. The original 4 blade metal fan in my 40 and corresponding fan shroud is very small. What I found looking at the measurements on that listing is that the 4 banger fan clutches all seem to take a smaller fan than the 6 banger fans and fan clutches. I suspect that is what you have run into. Looks like the B engines used the smaller diameter fan clutch of some sort. I think you could probably get the fan and clutch from a 4cylinder pickup and it would work.

I thought I could use the 38010 fan myself, but found the hub was probably too small, and most of the 4 cylinder fans protrude forward, or otherwise mount to the clutch in the middle of their plane, whereas all the 6 cylinder Land Cruiser and pickup engines seem to mount the fan to the clutch flush on the radiator side and push the blades back, providing more clearance for the radiator.

I think I will just have to buy one to fit my clutch and shave the blades down 10-15mm total or so.

Followup:

The FCT-001 clutch was the easiest for me to find (Amazon Prime!) so I ordered that one. Its the same size as the unobtainium 16210-56040 clutch except that the holes in the mounting flange are too small.

I easily drilled it to fit the 8mm 3B water pump studs and it bolted right up. I also drained it and refilled with 15000 cst silicone oil like the 80-series guys do, just in case it was set up for lighter duty applications.

The proper 380mm fan fits right on and is positioned perfectly in the shroud opening.

16210-56040 shows as BJ42-46 Euro and CDN as well as BJ70 JDM and CDN 84-87
Are you sure part is discontinued.

Well I certainly didn't check Toyota's warehouses myself, but neither my dealer nor my favorite online Toyota parts place can get it.

I am pretty sure if you were to contact a CDN Toyota dealer they could check availability on that part number for you.
Well most Toyota dealers I have run across a few that never heard of 40/60 or 70 series.

Just to update this thread:

And thanks to amaurer for the important information.

16210-56040 is indeed discontinued.

I ordered an FCT-057 which shows for a 3B but it will not fit the fan. Mates perfectly with the 8mm studs on the water pump but will not mate with the fan interface as it is too big. This fan clutch would work with US/Canada BJ60's.

I am going to do the same thing and order the FCT-001 and drill out the mating surface to accept the 8mm water pump studs.

Thank you!!
