if unsure when they were last done, change all the hoses and heater "T"s

Check the belt tensioner pulley and Idler pulley...give them a spin
with the belt off and see if they're noisy or "chunky" at all.
It's the best time to do it while the t-stat hose is out of the way.
And a fresh serpentine belt never hurt.
my 2 cents.

I had the same failure this weekend but managed to catch it before the fan and fan clutch detached from the bracket and contacted the radiator. Was driving fine, stopped at a rest stop on the highway and upon start-up it sounded like a bad rod knock, opened the hood and it was clear it was from the fan bracket.

No new ideas regarding 'while you're in there' components, but a reminder to folks who have not yet replaced the fan bracket at 200k + to listen carefully to that bearing and lift up on the fan clutch to check for deflection. Mine failed at 288k and I have seen multiple other reports right around the 280k mark.

Good luck with the repair, I'll be tearing into mine tomorrow!
