Nothing quite final but all the tires below I've been looking at are 40s. My short list is:

Gladiator Xcomp MT. I really like the sidewall treatment and the larger lugs in the center give me lots of option for grooving and siping. This is a bit of an unknown tire but it's my econo choice at the moment and leading the pack. I can get the best deal on these.

Maxxis Razr MT.

upload_2017-9-18_8-38-7.png

Mickey Thompson MTZ p3. Discount tire has a great price on these too. I've run mickey's before on another rig and generally liked them. These don't boil the blood for me but are a good choice for what I do.

Cooper STT Pro. These are getting some great reviews. Similar in price to the Maxxis Razr.

I'll probably wait until the black Friday deals come out and see what kind of discounts I can grab. One of my current tires is getting low on tread so I don't know if I'll make it through the winter season confidently.

Never did post a trip we took earlier this year as a birthday trip. We had gone down to southern Oregon for the dunes a couple of years ago and I wanted to go back. We played in the Spinreel area then. This time I wanted to see another section so we chose the northern most section called the North Riding Area from South Jetty to Siltcoos.

We weren't able to get anyone else to come along so we headed out on our own. With all the rain we got last season there was quite a bit of water out on the dunes. There was some kind of FJ Cruiser event so if I had issues at least there were other Toyota's out on the dunes. In fact one of them recognized me from Crusin' the Woods the year before where I helped his buddy get off the trail after a bad break.

At the top of some of the dunes it was windy but the kids had fun playing on the sand sculptures.

Took a tight brush trail which was probably not for trucks that became apparent halfway through. Got a little damage and had to rummage through my stash to see what would work.

It was the bolt holding my flag on that broke. Electrical tape and zip ties held it tight the rest of the weekend.

We found a great camping spot and pretty much had the campground to ourselves... until about 2 am the next morning when pretty much the worst campground neighbors had to choose the spot right next to us even though there were at least 20 other open sites. We quickly ate breakfast and packed the next morning so we could enjoy time on the sand and not have to be around them a minute longer.

Loved the trip and am looking forward to going back to play some more in the future.

On this little climb I let off too soon and got air in my injectors. Had to bleed them on at the angle.

engine shut off and that's why you got air on the lines .?

I was at full throttle and boost and lifted too quickly. With air in the injector lines the engine shut off. I believe it's a symptom of getting air in the fuel system somewhere and it works up to the injector lines and running bigger injectors, more fuel, and lots a boost plays a part in that. On the diesel sled pulls you see on youtube you see some guys reving a couple times after letting off the throttle at the end of their pull which I figure is the same reason, to keep fuel flowing so the injectors don't get air locked. I found a loose fitting and tightened that a while back, just can't remember if it was before this trip or not.

Hi boost might affect at that level the injectors ..? ( positive pressure ? )

Since my 1HD-T have more less the same pump .. I never experience that .. ( my hi boost it's not the same as your hi boost tho ! )

Sure, that could be possible. The high boost/internal compression is lifting the needle inside the injector nozzle and letting a little compression in the injector line. Though it would have to overcome 245 bar (+3500 psi) which is the pop pressure needed from the injector pump to lift the needle and spray fuel. While my injectors are big they aren't crazy big like you see on some of the 6bt guys and I'm not pushing crazy boost like some of those guys either. That's why I figured I was getting air in somewhere else. I've never watched my lift pump fuel pressure gauge (mounted in the engine bay) on a full throttle assault to see if it's keeping up with supplying enough fuel to the injection pump. It doesn't do this every time so that's part of the mystery and it's been quite a while since it has done it.

IIRC, people on 4BTSwaps call that injection pump cavitation, and is a result of running very large injectors. What injectors do you have in there now?

I either had SAC 5x12 or VCO 5x12 at that time.

have you considered running a surge canister? when you have fluid or air flow and shut the flow, reversion happens. If it is a straight shot back to your tank you'll get air in the system. A surge canister helps solve that issue. Side benefit is if you make it out of iron pipe with caps on either end, border patrol will think you're bringing in a pipe bomb to Canada :cautious:

the help - it creates a shock-absorber in the system that cannot draw air on the bounce-back.

I decided to go with the Gladiator Xcomps in 40x13.5 R17. The black Friday deals weren't awesome but the price of these tires already were so it was still a good buy. I was worried about them balancing out and told the salesman that so he said we'd check it out once they get them mounted. The worst tire only took 5 ounces which is fantastic for this size of tire.

I've only driven surface streets so far and towed a trailer a short distance. I haven't had them on the freeway yet (more on that later, not tire related) but they are smooth and as loud as any standard mud tire in fact they are quieter than my worn down MTRs I replaced but that's typical going from worn MT's to new MT's. So far I'm happy with the first impressions and the size better fills out my fender wells.

I still have plenty of room to fit in the carport too. I was expecting that since I did fit running those 42 rockers in the summer for a month.

The only downside is that I had to screw out my turning stops to keep the tires out of the leaf springs so I've increased my turning radius which I expected. New rims are not in the cards for now and the studs up front were not long enough to run some 1/2" spacers I picked up so I'm thinking of transferring my current rear spacers up front and then getting some wider ones for the rear to balance out the track width. That way they can be removable when I go to less backspaced rims in the future but get some turning radius back with my current rims. I still like the look of the H2 rims with the 60's body lines so I don't mind keeping them.

Yeah it's mostly to due with these rims being 5.5" backspaced. If my other rims hadn't bit the dust (3.5" backspaced) it wouldn't have this issue. I was surprised when the 42's didn't rub but those were on 3.5" backspaced wheels. Oh well.

Time to get in a few more updates from this last year.

Sprung an oil leak on my small turbo drain. I though it was gasket related so I resealed it but it continued to leak. Let it leak for a while and finally got around to fix it. It's pretty easy to leave the exhaust housing bolted up and just remove the rest of the turbo from that.

The tube to base connection had a crack. Cleaned off all the JBweld, re-welded it and ground down a couple of times, reapplied more JBweld over the top and reinstalled the turbo.

It's been leak free ever since. Now the large turbo drain is leaking again. I'll eventually get back to that one too. What I really need is a welder with finer controls. Zach, I'll have to bug you for some TIG time in the future when I feel like dealing with this again. These have just been to finicky to weld right with my too-powerful-for-this-job welder.

This last summer I had a fan failure. One of my ford contour dual fans seized up and burned out a connector. Luckily the other one keep working and temps were kept within a reasonable range on our return from a hot camping trip. It happened on the freeway with the sun down.

I wanted to upgrade so after weighing options from my research I settled on this dual fan kit from Maradyne. It is the MJS22K with the 225 watt motors.

They are 12" fans which is a little bigger than the ford contour fans.

I didn't use the mounts it came with. Instead I measured 20 times and used the mounting holes on the FJ60 radiator so I drilled those holes in the shroud. The shroud has a nice rubber grommet and is just as wide as the flanges on the radiator so it was the biggest perfect fit I could get.

I fit it up and routed the wires a little cleaner.

Ever since installing these I have not gotten above 205F. I think the more open shroud and blade design is really allowing my hood vents to work well. Now that the weather has cooled down I have a hard time staying above 180F traveling on the freeway and the fans barely kick on now, only in stop and go traffic. Overall this was a great upgrade and looks like it will give me the added cooling capacity I needed to look into getting my AC installed. Since these main fans aren't on as frequently as the old set I've noticed my tranny runs warmer since that cooler is in front of the cooling row. I may need to get a little pusher fan for that cooler in which case I could relocate it but for now it's been great.
