I have some questions about the process for fabricating another fuel tank (secondary) for the LC....what area would I post this in?

Thanks

Generally that kind of stuff is posted in the "XXX series" section, so you're in the right section, but with no 200 series owners, you might want to also post in the 80 or 100 series section, explaining what/why you are posting there.

MAF (Man-a-fre) and SOR (Spector Off Road), and maybe some others I am not thinking of, have sold some subtank setups before, also people have bought from ebay australia, or contacted Oz junkyards, or made connections in the forums here to get the necessary parts. I recommend you look in the 80 series faq to see if there are any writeups about subtanks, just to give you an idea what is involved to make it work like factory. I really don't know much about them, so hopefully you can find some info.

Obviously, with the 200 series being so new, you probably won't have as many options easily available.

Pretty sure other countries have the OEM sub tank as stock. Might want to check with one of the members ( a lot in the 100 series tech) to see if they can price out a unit for you.

If it were me, I would find a local "fuel tank maker" to make me a 50 gallon tank!

Tanks have to be C.A.R.B. and D.O.T. compliant.

Since nobody in the US makes a tank for the 100 series, which has been sold since 1998, you may face an uphill battle.

Some overseas mfg. will probably make one for the 200 series eventually, then you could source one overseas at great expense.

Here is a place in Socal who may be able to build you a tank at GREAT expense:

Well I just spoke to aerotanks. The person I spoke to was very helpful. Basically it is simple. I give them the plans and dimensions and they fabricate it for me. All approved and simple.

She said on average a 50 gallon tank (which is what I see the other after market tank sizes to be for a LC) would run me about $500-$550 and about 7-10 days.

Not Bad! Now I just need someone to help me make the plans :)

How much to drop the truck off at the shop and have them do all the work? Design to install?

How about upgrading the suspension to handle the extra weight?

Just food for thought... I admire your determination!

I am on hold with them now....going to ask all those questions...but not about suspension. :)

It is not determination...it is just against my religion to fill up more then once a week!

UPDATE:

They don't work on anything newer then 98 unless it is diesel....too much work with the California emissions etc. I asked for anyone they could recommend...here was his quote:

"Everyone I know quit...it is too much hassle"

Well knowing the gun laws here in california, I cannot say I blame them!

Well,

They could still build a custom style tank if you can provide a drawing right? Keep the old tank in case you want to sell the truck?

Upgraded rear springs are easy. Deaver Spring in Santa Ana could build them, and they build great springs. The shop I told you about works with them too.

Or just wait for the Old Man Emu stuff to hit these shores. They can't be too far out.

Here was a recent thread from the FJCruiser forum that may be of interest to you:

Ok, I just spoke to troy. Nice guy! Anyway he said that what would be best at this point is to take some pics of the underside where the current tank is. Take out the spare and take some pics from there also.

This will give him a better idea as to what we are dealing with.
Then once he thinks it is doable, he will head down to his local toyota dealer and look up and close at one they have there.

If I have to, I will drive 8 hours to him, leave my truck, rent a car, and go back when it is done.

Fr me to get a 50 gallon tank on this sucker, I would do almost anything.

Just wait a couple of months and you'll be seeing new aux tank offerings from companies like Out of Town 4wd (The Long Ranger) and Long Range Automotive both Australian companies. They'll likely have something in the ~44 Gallon capacity. Their past tanks have been well designed to use most of the nooks and crannies and optimize the empty space under there.

Who wants to wait!??!?!?!

Well my brother in law is a welder so I was talking to him and mentioned about he replacement tank I want to get.

He said the easiest thing would be to purchase the one for the previous model and then we can easily change it to fit my truck.

That sounded great...until I just realized something......The gas tank is on the OPPOSITE side (passenger now) then the previous models (drivers side).

I wonder if that is TOO much of a difference to fix up.....

I gots a wonderful Idea for you :) This'll enhance your truck visually, make it look more tuffer and utilitarian. Order a tire carier and license plate relocator as a replacement part from the middle east and bolt that sucker on your truck. Now you have a huge space for a spare gas tank, your truck looks sweet and you have way better access to your spare tire and you wont get dirty much when putting on the spare when changing your tires.

I do gotta warn you. Doing mods on your truck is sucking you into a bad habbit we on this forum and every other 4x4 forum and non 4x4 forum members. What we have isn't enough. The 4x4 world is far different from the normal vehicle car world. In a 4x4, we want to make it far more capable when we reach the limits of what we have, and the more capable it is, the more we dig deeper into mother nature, the more obstacles and the more mods to get deeper and deeper. And before you know it, your truck can't fit in the garage, has soo much goodies on it that your worried about somehting getting stolen and/or its getting closer to be illegally driven on public roads.

Then again, were nuts and thats why were here :) I thank my busy life for keeping me busier than before. My 07 FJ and my 02 4Runner haven't been modded.. much do to my busy life. VS my previous Toys that i've spent soo much green on making them the way I want them just to find myself hungry for more.:D
