I think the 73 has about an 80 lt fule tank which I don't find adequate for weekend trips in the bush. I also don't like carying fuel in the car.

What other options are there? Has anybody fitted an auxilary or sub tank? Is there a larger tank available?

FYI - I am in Melbourne, Australia

i think you could probably get a tank made up that fits in the mid section of the car behind the gearbox. My car is on lpg with a tank in the back, takes space but still plenty of room inside for two people and their gear. So i've got about 150L of fuel on board to use

I think Long Ranger have a 140 litre tank which is a straight plug and play unit. I think for a 73 series you have to order them .They dont keep them in stock.
I got 2 prices,one wanted $1200 and another wanted $900ish.

The stock tank is supposed to be 90 litre but the most I have got is about 85

$1200 is a bit expensive. I think for that price that I would rather go with duel fuel LPG, with the space saver tanks, if I don't loose any ground clearence.

I havent seen the space saver tanks. The LPG tanks I looked at hung down 100mm lower than the existing tank and you can only get a 30-40 litre reserve petrol tank ,just north of the rear axle.

In the end I put a 1HZ diesel in and get 600klms + or 12.5 ltr/100klms.

I would be looking at the Long Ranger ,you cant refuel an LPG in the bush. I also believe the dual fuel 4wds suffer some reliability issues.Just my opinion from listening to others;)
Maybe you can find a fabricator to custom make a tank at a lower price.

The other option is to sell the FJ73 and buy diesel 7* You can take extra diesel in jerry cans with no risk of explosions.
If want a truly reliable landcruiser capable of traveling a long way without fuel stops, then diesel is the only answer,IMO of course;)

Here are some pictures.
