external or internal regulator (1 Viewer)

70 fj40, im assuming i have an external regulator, am i correct? if i am, is there a test i can do to test the regulator alone to see if my alternator has a problem or if its just my regulator?

The external regulator is on the driver's side firewall, below the master. I would have the battery checked and if it is good then have the alternator tested at an auto electric shop, then if that's OK, order a new regulator.
I don't trust the chain stores that offer "free testing".
