I've been looking at photos of off road trailers off and on for the past week or so while tinkering on the interwebs. I am curious if there's a reason that most designs use an 'external' sheet metal type of fender instead of incorporating the fender into the trailer? i.e. most off road trailers are like step side pickup trucks instead of the standard pickup truck bed. Is there a compelling reason for this?

I'll take a shot at answering your question;

easier to fab a box and put external fenders on it, rather than construct a cargo box inside an outer shell and fab interior fender.

also easier to move assorted stuff in/out w/o the obstruction of fender wells. I've never been able to sweep the last bits of hay/gravel/ firewood out of the back of a pickup, but it all slides right outta my trailer.

My 2c.

that is a good question.
always thought that the 416 was wasting a lot of space with that feature. Some of the bigger military ones (101s?) don't have it.

Not only is it easier, but it's a lot cheaper to build a box bed with external fenders.

I figured it must be a price and ease of manufacturing issue. I just haven't used one of these before and thought there might be something else that would be painfully obvious if you had used one of these trailers but non-obvious to newbies.

I've also thought about other more esoteric reasons for external fenders like tire blowouts.
