Hi All

I've searched some and haven't found a sticky on which parts on an fj40 came cad plated from the factory and figured it would be a good resource for someone doing a restoration job on their rig.

So besides the nuts and bolts. What parts of the 40 came cad coated from the factory? Yellow or White Cad? Also, If you know whether something was cad coated for some years but not others please post that information too.

I know this exhaust deal was cad coated thanks to Mark confirming my suspicions:

Well, definitely a bang up thread so far. I've found the following parts to show cad remnants:

Coolant pipe

T-stat, fuel lines, and valve cover both show evidence but I'm not positive on the VC at all, any thoughts?

Hose connection piece. I painted this part less than a month ago and it already has corrosion.

Exhaust hangers

Screen on back of alternator

Radiator brace
Not sure about this either but parts were shiny under crumby spray job

Starter bits

Any thoughts? I like to put things back to stock while I'm in there. Obviously it's not bone stock but since I'm plating bolts anyway...

Oh, also the fan surround but not sure about the upright brackets of the radiator itself.

Were the parts cad. or yellow zinc plated. A big difference. My understanding is that Cadmium is alot more rust resistant than just yellow zinc, which the auto industry uses.

Cad. costs more also.

I think they were all yellow cad, not zinc. Cadmium was common coating in many foreign and domestic cars for some time. It's hard to find platers that do cadmium (yellow 2 is common for auto) zinc is what folks use now because cad is more money. I'm using Billmark plating in Ft Worth. I sent one box of fasteners in a medium quick ship and am sending the larger ones tomorrow. The box I sent first was jam packed and it will cost about $70. Their email on the site is wrong. It is actually billmarkplating@gmail.com in case you wanted to contact them. I spoke with Tim.

From what I can tell so far, if it attached to the chassis with a bolt it was probably plated (assuming it wasn't painted) I'm not sure about the valve cover and thermostat, I have remnants of something gold on mine but they are aluminum so it doesn't make sense that they would be. The other stuff I'm positive about. I have more photos on my phone from tonight I'll post. The headlight housing and side marker housings were also plated (probably all light housings) but I'm not redoing mine as they are in good shape.

Should clarify Cadmium is more money and less common now because its bad stuff to handle and dispose of so there are lots of regs.

Here are some more items

Bottom of starter (this seems different on different models)

Hose clamps

This also seems the same for clamps around the charcoal canister.

If you know of more or see a mistake please correct it. I'm just scraping rust to find out in most cases.

Tubalubb,

You're right , it is hard to find a shop. I got lucky, the town next to me has a shop that plates for the military and aero industry. For @ a five gal. bucket worth of parts, I pay $100. It adds up fast.

Fuel lines had some sort of coating but were not cad plated... at least not on my '78. When I replaced one with new OEM it was also painted or coated with a grey/olive color.

Well it very well could be; honestly I never looked that close as I'm sort of cad biased, so all that glitters... Oh well, it's cad now!

I don't think that very many parts came CAD plated. I believe most of the parts were yellow zinc.

i always thought that was just copper. but then i'm copper biased since a lot of the lines under the hood of my 62 are copper

Don't forget that things changed over the years. The late models came plated. (Yellow zinc).

I don't know, I've not seen zinc, (talking specifically about yellow colored items) the ones I've had are clearly cad with that oily type green & red sheen (mines a 78) and it was pretty common fare on cars for many many years. I can do a test to confirm however.

The place I use to dip parts said that cad would hold up to the process but zinc would not. I can take a part in with my next batch and see what happens. I'm not being argumentative as you clearly have more time and experience with these than I do, I'm just going on what I can accurately (for the most part) observe under the grime..
