The tail pipe and muffler are rusted and need replacing. I've seen somewhere a 2.5 pipe, put a single cat and muffler were recommended as the way to go. What do you guys think would be the best setup. It's a stock 1988 FJ62. At some point they would have to merge the two pipes from the exhaust manifold right? Would the diameter of the head pipes stay the same? Imput please. thx clone

Don't overlook the O2 sensors. Keep them the same distance from the end of the manifolds, you can either keep 2 down pipes (what I would do), or Y them together and put the 2 sensors in the same pipe.

FWIW, I have 2 down pipes running to a dual in, single out muffler around or slightly forward from the stock position. No emissions testing, so my cats have been deleted.

if you are in california I would check the 2009 smog laws. they are pretty tough and i think the exhaust needs to be the stock layout. The cat requirements have changed as well.
