I was on this forum even prior to owning one! I am a current owner of all BMW's and decided that this Texas heat is killing them softly! So up they go and finally I have my dream truck! Haven't a clue why I always loved these but after interviewing previous owners, I decided on this one! The owners loved it so. A tree hit it and dented the top and destroyed the windshield so it sat for over a year.

I picked it up and drove it home. Interesting to get use to especially when I am normally in a 6 series shark.

They mentioned the mechanic bypassed a hose that I attached photos of because there was a leak. Well I have a bit of time here in Texas to figure this out before it even thinks of being cold! I do love the R134 as this thing is ICE COLD!!!!

Can anyone tell me what the hose is? I thought to re connect and check for the leak.

Also I attached undercarriage. Does all look well?

I really appreciate all the help gang and happy to be here! A welcome break from changing a water pump in my 750il!

Welcome to the addiction!

Nice find! Truck looks pretty clean.
The hose that was bypassed is a fairly common work around for the beloved PHH (pesky heater hose).

Check out the sticky in this forum that has the FAQ section. You'll find a lot of info that will catch you up to speed. Also, if you do a search for gotmud + FSM, you'll find a thread where I posted a link to the FSM for a '94.

Thanks gotmud! I will seek it out. So that's what the leak is that they stated is above the bell housing.

Glad to know it looks ok.

I was thinking of taking it to Jiffy Lube to do the fluids change. Is that an ok thing?

Gotmud, you know more about these trucks than I do, but when I look at the hose photo it looks like they bypassed the heater valve (not the PHH). I'm looking at it on my phone, so the picture is kinda small for me.

If it were me, I'd hook it back up like original and see where it leaks - then fix it correctly. I'm guessing the rear heat lines were leaking.

Ditto. Looks like the heater system was bypassed. It doesn't look like a PHH bypass because you can still see the metal tube coming up that the bypass hose is connected to. That tube wouldn't be there if the PHH was bypassed. BYPASS!

I wouldn't take anything to jiffy/ quick/ auto lube - almost always a half-assed job with rounded/ stripped bolts plus if you do it yourself you'll probably catch a lot more potential issues while your down there

Got it! I will do it myself. Need to find a list for fluid change and then I will do a tune up later.

So with this scary PHH - and the statement of bypass, will this still allow the heater to work?

I am going to hook it back and take a peek.

Thanks again all for chiming in!

I love this thing and not yet a week in the family.

Thanks Franken...I got that when I tested it. Just glad I have some months out here in this DFW heat!

To answer your question. Yes a PHH bypass will still allow the heat for up front. The way it is bypaased now. The heated water never leaves the engine bay. So you have no heat at all as it is now.

Def. the heater valve is bypassed. I would pick up a new oem one and hook it back up. Any pics of the rest of the truck?

I don't know about the hose, but WELCOME!!! Show us a pic of your new rig too!

Good looking rig! As has already been said, welcome to the addiction!

Welcome again! nice truck, jealous of the cloth seats :flipoff2:.
here's a link to an online factory service manual, should help with reinstalling your heater valve. I'd start looking for a service manual in the classifieds, they pop up every now and then....good luck.

(check under "engine", then "cooling system"

and a link to Birfmark's downloadable FSM for a 1996, should be the same for the heater valve...
