I'm working on a spare diff, and I notice there is some numbers etched into the edge of the ring gear??? Anybody know what they are? Pinion depth? Backlash? Preload? Or maybe they mean nuttin'? Inquiring minds want to know!

Cheers!

iirc, it's teeth count so you know ratio

Some manufacturers do etch the gear specs (clearances) on the gear too... What does your say? What brand?

Let me clarify. There are some stamped numbers that give the tooth count and other stuff that I'm sure the manufacturer, in this case Toyota, put there. The numbers I'm referring to have been etched in with a scribing tool...I don't exactly remember the numbers right now, but I think it was something like 89?? These are stock Toyota ring gears..

Cheers!

Did a search, and after a bit found my answer....it appears to be the Backlash figure from the factory in mm....kinda handy if you are re-using those gears and want them quiet!

Cheers!
