I have a 66 FJ40 and I want to swap out my drive train completely. I am looking for a good combination Engine/Trans/Transfer case. I want to spend around 4-5k on the drive train and would really appreciate suggestions and opinions on what I should go with. I would mostly be using the vehicle as a daily driver/ weekend mudder. I would also like to know problems that anyone has encountered while doing this kind of swap and if there is anyone around Lafayette Louisiana that would possibly help me out .

Thanks

81-later frt disc brake swap.
Some kinda rear axle disc parking brake setup.

Hi All:

Sorry Jim - no disrespect, but I gotta disagree with you on this one.

He mentioned using the rig as a daily driver and a weekend mudder.

For all-around driveability a fuel injected engine and auto trans would be nice. Since he is willing to spend $5K a GM Vortec 5.3L with like a 700R4 and a 3.0 Orion would be pretty sweet.

Just a thought . . . . . . :D

If you are doing the work yourself, can't do much better than any of the Gen 3/4 Vortec engines(4.8, 5.3, or 6.0)

I could have picked up a 6.0L w/ 4l80 tranny for under $2k... I opted just for the 6.0L and went with NV4500.

From there, skies the limit.... except for the length in a 40.

In my 40, when I daily drove it, I ran a 5.0L TBI, SM465, and stock FJ40 tcase with 4.1 gears and 35" tires. Worked well for me.

In my FJ55, I'm going to daily drive with 6.0L Vortec, NV4500, NP203, to stock FJ case(save for orion) with 4.88 gears and 35s.

For daily drive, I think EFI is a must. OD is kind of nice because you can adjust your axle gears for your tires. But 35s with 4.1 didn't leave me wanting an OD:meh:

I completely agree with Jim on this for three reasons:

1. It's a proven combo in the FJ60, which is a DD for MANY people.
2. It's a cheaper, SIMPLER option than a vortec auto conversion, which means...
3. It's MUCH MORE LIKELY TO GET DONE before the owner runs out of steam!

Best
