Hi there,

I hope you can help me out here. My LJ78 sometimes suddenly stalls when coasting towards a traffic light/stop sign when I hit the clutch to take out the gear/shift down. On the odd occasion it has also done this when idling at a light. It only happens when the engine is warm and I have been driving it for about 20min or more. I changed the fuel filter and the injector pumps but that didn't solve it. Any ideas what it could be? I have a vague feeling it might be the solenoid but I am not exactly sure how it works/how to test it.
Thanks in advance,

Tim

Air leak in your fuel system.

Place some clear tubes between your filter and the inj pump and on the return line from the pump to the tank - and look for small air bubbles.

PS: Seems like 2LTE powered vehicles should get their own forum or sub-forum - Mods?

Thanks John,

will try that. If it pans out that there are air bubbles in the tubes, how do I fix it/what could be the cause of this?

Problem solved

I think I have identified the problem. Pretty sure it is the EGR (UFP shaped thing) not working properly. I blocked all 3 vacuum hoses and it hasn't let me down yet! As far as I could figure out its only purpose is to reduce emissions and should harm the engine, if anyone knows more about it let me know,

EGR valve can be removed and blanked off..
I.e remove valve and pipes, make up blanks for exhaust and intake.
Don't just disable it by stopping the vacuum getting to the switches / actuator.
As the valve can leak or stick open.
The EGR system is an emission control device. And removing it will stop the dirty soot exhaust gases getting into your intake and gumming up the manifold.
Plenty of info here or on the wider web about EGR removal.

Not sure on your local SMOG laws... As some countries / states require those devices to be fitted.
In this case slip a blank between valve and manifold, just looks like a gasket.

I am getting to the EGR later this week using the plates (no SMOG checks in NZ). I have actually blocked off the vac hoses on the UFO shaped valve (see picture, is that the venturi?) as mentioned on some other sites. Do both need to be deactivated or only the EGR?

here wo go again

I guess I wasn't lucky after all. I blocked off the egr and removed the blocks of the vacuum valve going to the small butterlfy as it did NOT solve the problem. I then replaced the fuel pipes coming from the tank to the filter, the one from the filter to the IP and the one coming back from the IP to the tank and checked for bubbles. Except for the bubbles after I changed the pipes they seem to be clear and without air. I also blew bank into the tank to free it from any possible gunk. I don't thin it's the solenoid as it always works well when it starts and then runs for about 30-40 minutes. Also, it always stalls at the same location after a long and quite steep downhill bit where I need no gas, when I stop to shift into first gear to get up our driveway. Any clues as to how to identify what it might be? I'd hate to randomly start exchanging parts.

Any help much appreciated.

P.S. Thanks for the link on NZ offroading!
