Hi

I have a carburetted FJ62. I am using 95 Octane unleaded petrol.

I am noticing that my engine is pinging under load at about 2000rpm. There is no pinking on a flat road. Uphill I get that dreaded rattle.

I have just had a head gasket replacement.

Does anyone have easy suggestions for me to look in to?

Could it be something other than pinking that I'm not considering?

Thanks

Also I would check your fuel air mixture. If it's too lean it can ping due to preignition during the compression stroke. What's the story with the carb and what elevation do you live and drive?

Hi

So I did as you guys said. Validated the fuel air mixture was fine. Thanks for the tip. I am running at sea level. What should I do if I drive inland at increased elevation?

I noticed that my ignition timing was out. We fixed it and the pinking stopped.

Well it would have to be way off to cause pre-ignition, usually you would just see a loss in power. That's just something people normally deal with on a carbed vehicle unless they are staying at higher elevation.

One can only typically get away with a few degrees of advance at higher elevation. If you choose to bump up the timing at high elevation, I wouldn't go more than 3-5 degrees of advance over your sea level setting.
