Serial number of the engine is stamped into the block on a flat surface, right by the starter motor...
These are casting numbers....
SOR.com used to have a list of numbers and years for engines.

Can you post some pics of the engine? 
How about some pics of all the different numbers on the left side of the block?
We could tell a lot from that. With decent pics of all numbers, we can even tell the exact day of production.

Those numbers you posted are on the drivers side, cast into the iron. The number you want is on the other side on a lip behind the dizzy and below the coil, as Poser posed.
