Does anyone know someone who would be helpful to get a '78 FJ40 to pass. Since the PO registered it in Bluewater he desmogged it and put a Weber carb on. Thanks

Rudy

You have a 40?

I have heard (although, again, I can neither confirm nor deny...) that if you run it out of gas and put a couple of gallons of white gas (Coleman's from e.g. Walmart) it will pass.

No, but a good friend that introduced me to the club just bought his old one back. But when he realizes that he is "new" Dad, he sells them off. I bought my last three from him :hhmm:....

Intresting.

Aquire the title and ladder frame to a 1974 or earlier FJ40 and swap everything to it. If that is to much work, I have heard the that the part of the frame that has the VIN van be cut out and welded into the subject vehicle. Problem solved, permanatley.

I had a 72 rolling chasis with title, and gave it to Rory a few years ago, don't know what he ever did with it, but he is out of the landcruiser game now, so might be worth asking.

If it was truly desmogged then the owner is probably hosed. Without all the smog crap it would not pass a visual inspection (is that required here?). The other issue is that most of the Weber carbs people slap into a LC have two barrels, both of which open equally under load. This usually creates a very rich condition which will make passing smog difficult.

FWIW, the white gas thing does work if the engine hasn't been monkeyed with too much. Problem is it's very hard to find these days - there are very few people still using the old Coleman stoves and lanterns than ran on it. Propane is king these days.

My dad 'might' be able to help. He would probably consult on the challenge for a small fee. I'll send you his contact info in PM. He even lives in your neck of the woods.

I think he can some of the smog stuff back. He said the PO "should" still have it. I am "shooting in the dark" here. As far as a visual inspection, I am not sure about that, but it can be looked into.

Thanks Marc! Let's see what going on.

White gas is easy to find. Walmart my friend.

The last I recall, the smog stuff under the hood is not inspected. But he will likely need to have a catalytic converter installed as that is still inspected. And then he has to pass the emissions numbers specified for that vehicle. It's possible to do this without the smog equip. but not easy.

Then it'll depend on whether or not the emissions tech is knowledgable regarding what's on what year and the reference book is accurate. I had a '76 Datsun pickup that did not have a cat and ran on regular as well. When leaded gas became impossible to get, I started using unleaded without the additive and it continued to run just fine. :meh:

oh yes, they do run fine on unleaded(over time there can be some issues). still don't need a cat, and the door plate says "non-catalyst" right on it.

Well, my friend got his 40 passed. Even without all the smog stuff. I don't if it depends if the stuff is there or who you have or what, but if it passes, great. He just changed the timing. Marc hooked him up with his dad to give him some advice and he ran with it. Thanks Marc!

I'm glad my dad could help. He's pretty skilled at most things mechanical. Too bad he's not really employable with his bad back so he has to supplement his $1,000/mo SSI disability check with jobs like this.

Absolutely illegal in New Mexico and a perfect way to get the vehicle impounded and a felony charge for tampering.

Well i wouldn't recommend that then, there is defiantly some gray area in the fraken-cruiser approach. I am not a lawyer, but keeping the bulk of the ladder frame associated with the vin seems reasonably legit
