Hey, that big old union nut of the EGR hose is a tough one to crack, for me at least. Dumb question, I have been trying to turn it counterclockwise (when looking towards the windshiled from the front bumper). Is this the proper way?

I am using a 1-1/4" angled wrench as a few others here have suggested, (the actual nut size is 32mm I believe) but I feel like its "rounding off" instead of turning the nut.

Also, if I am trying to remove the EGR Valve, do I have to remove the studs in the upper intake or just remove the nuts. It doesn't look like it is necessary to remove the studs?

Thanks for any information y'all might have.

You'll want to remove the studs to get it out of there - the large nut won't back off enough to allow you to pull the EGR off the EGR pipe without removing them. Getting it back together can be annoying, as well. You'll want to have a prying tool on hand to get the EGR/pipe lined up when trying to restart that nut. Can take a surprising amount of force to flex into place. If you remove that bolt holding the coolant pipe to the driver's side of the EGR you will have room to swing a large crescent, which may be a better fit than what you're using. Don't round it off.

Spray PB BLaster or similar on the fitting. The threads are huge, so lots of room for the oil to penetrate properly. Give it a day or two. I"m assuming this is not a pressure job?

Thanks Doug and previous responders. You are correct, this is not a pressure job. I have a "hunk-of-junk" 1991 Sentra that gets me to and from work.

I just got back from Harbor Freight to get a size E7 reverse torq socket to remove the studs. 5 sockets for $7.99. Not too bad.

Thanks- Ken

I hit mine with pb blaster a couple of times and was able to get a wrench on it and was surprised that I got it loose on the first try. I did not remove the studs and was able to re assemble without much trouble. Good luck!

Thanks. I was able to remove the Union Nut after spraying some WD-40 on it a couple of times. I did use the angle 1-1/4" wrench with success. My large crescent jaws just made it a little too difficult.

The studs did come off pretty easy after som WD-40 and with tthe use of reverse torq sockets.

I putting in a new vsv and hopefully fuel filter and phh bypass hose while intake is off.

To replace, I put on one stud at the front, hookup the EGR pipe, started the threaded part a turn or two with the big nut. and then put a socket on to the central nut between the two stud locations and applied torque to it which allowed the second stud to go in more easily.

What Jaques said. Installing is often tough because things don't line up as well without applying some force.
