So your "friend" needs some advice, eh? Well, tell your "friend" that he may need more than Prozac. :D

I had a "friend" who was on Prozac many years ago. Tell your friend to avoid drinking while taking that stuff. My "friend" went crazy after a night of heavy drinking and kicked the s*** out of three dudes for no reason at all. Way out of character for this guy.

Also, it took trying several different meds to find the one that worked for him. Tell him to be patient and if the Prozac doesn't work after five or six weeks, then move onto something else.

You talking to me? ARE YOU TALKING TO ME???

A lot of people will get "hyper" the first few weeks on Prozac. They usually settle down when they get into the actual thereputic phase after 3-4 weeks. Sometimes they cannot sleep well at first and a sleeping pill temporarily will help. As long as it isn't too extreme, the hyper phase is not an indicator that Prozac isn't going to be helpful in the longer term.

Dan, Prozac is an medicine used to treat folks with chemical imbalances of the brain neurotransmitters (little hormone-like chemicals that communicate among the nerves in the brain). It is in the group of meds called SSRIs, which work on the transmitter called seritonin. It is especially useful for some people with depression or anxiety-type disorders.

    :)

seriously, there are potential serious psychological side effects to Prozac, apparently.
One colleague was on it and committed suicide unexpectedly. Heard of another one, same thing. Read this is not uncommon....
So careful with this stuff, some reading probably advised....

They don't give Prozac to normal people, people with depression get it. Sometimes depressed people commit suicide. During the "ramp-up" phase of treatment with any antidepressant it is possible for some people to submit to suicidal impulses and it is true, anyone with depression should be observed for suicidal tendancies.

Yes, and effective for lots of us in moderation. But there are also lots of people who try to treat severe brain chemical imbalances with alcohol and end up with very screwed-up lives, Dan.

I like this statement from the article:

SSRIs have been the focus of much controversy. Some feel that SSRIs are prescribed by overzealous doctors or psychiatrists in cases where their use is only marginally indicated. According to this argument, societal pressures have created a precedent for the pursuit of "normal" mental or emotional functioning by chemical means versus a more holistic approach (diet, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, etc). Furthermore, in late 2004 much media attention given to a proposed link between SSRI use and juvenile suicide. For this reason, the use of SSRIs in pediatric cases of depression is now recognized by the FDA as warranting a cautionary statement to the parents of children who may be prescribed SSRIs by a family doctor. [1]

It is of interest to me to note that while the media alarm was raised by that study, NOT ONE JUVENILE looked at in the study actually did commit suicide. But the article fails to mention that. Why do you suppose that is?

Such a hot button issue.

I know a few people that have taken Prozac including my mom took it while on chemo
    - not drinking is a very good idea
    - possible (likely) sexual side effects- ie. loss of interest

St John's wart has had mixed results as an effective natural alternative
