I am trying to trouble shoot my 78 BJ40 that is 24v.

My trouble is that the EDIC motor does not move and it is stuck in the stop position. I have trouble shot the Fuel Control Relay and it appears to be fine in accordance with the FSM. The fuses are in check and the vehicle starts fine if I disconnect the linkage between the fuel injector and EDIC motor.

In my mind the motor should be in the stop position with the vehicle turned off. As soon as I turn the key to the ACC ON position it should move to the run position. When turning the key to the start position the engine starter should turn and the EDIC motor should pull the lever back into the overinjection position until you release the key from the start position. Am I wrong?

Is it likely that the motor is shot?

I have circled a part I am unfamiliar with.
What function does this serve? Will the EDIC motor pull the lever arm back into this spring loaded part to cause the overinjection?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

What you describe is correct(as to how it should work). What you have circled is the HAC(High Altitude Compensator). It is a diaphram that expand/contracts with the atmospheric pressures of elevations. It is supposed to lean the fuel at higher elevations to keep power and egt's at a better ratio.

Thanks guys,

What is the over injection magnet? Is that something on different models?

You have the function and sequence correct, but at least on my HJ60, the EDIC stays in the overinject position for 15 seconds to allow for oil pressure to build and disregard the low oil pressure switch sending unit from shutting the engine down. After that 15 seconds, insufficient oil pressure should result in the EDIC motor moving to the STOP position.

What you're dealing with is exactly what caused me to abandon the whole EDIC system and go to a kill rod running to the fuel cut off where the EDIC arm goes. The other end of the rod goes through the firewall and ends in a very sexy knob. See:

For details regarding that setup, see the thread from which that post was pulled (the link to it is in the top right corner of that post).

Changing the EDIC relay didn't fix this problem for me. So, either the EDIC motor went bad, or some other component unknown to me went bad which wasn't giving me this 15 second oil pressure building time... As soon as I would release the key, the engine would shut down, despite me having more than satisfactory oil pressure.

I am having a problem that also could be due to my edic. My 1980 bj40 will not shut off when cold and has huge amounts of black smoke comming from the tail pime under high revs. The problem goes away when warm. I found a used edic for $350 canadian is this a good deal for this used part? I was told that these parts (24 volt) are getting harder to find is this true? thanks for any help on this

Ho wow, that fuel pump detail should go into some of the fuel pump thread.! That one is a first time for me!

Thank you for the post guys.
We found out the source of the problem. After checking the continuity of each of the wires and the fuel control relay. We discovered it was a bad ground. It is always the simplest things. I didnt even know where the ground for the EDIC was located. (mine is on the drivers fender located with the apron). It just took time.

@Tofudebeest, I also did the whole EDIC delete thing and I am very happy.
