Well, I just went through the process of changing the fluid in my clutch fan. I felt it wasn't operating correctly. I put in cst 7000 oil from the hobby shop after letting it drain overnight.
There wasn't much oil in there to begin with! Now all buttoned back up and it still seems to be behaving the same. No roar of the fan on start. I haven't had it good and warm yet to see if it's moving more air at that point.

Anyone else with an Eaton clutch tell me how theirs operates? Does it roar on start up?

With both fan clutches out,

I was spinning my eaton clutch (filled w/ 10K) and noticed that after some spins, resistance eased up and it spun more freely.

The blue clutch just had the same resistance with equal amount of spinning. It never eased up resistance.

I wonder if this is just because I filled and didn't have a chance for the fluid to move around or if there is something wrong w/ the clutch.

Hovenator,
I twisted mine open to get the fluid out, otherwise only a tiny bit dripped out.

I'm replacing the fluid in my eaton clutch monday or tuesday with 10k. I'll let you know how it goes.

i dont have an eaton, but when my fan clutch died, i just replaced it with a non oem hayden one from napa. works great, lots of resistance when spinning the fan, roar @ startup, and no more overheating pulling the trailer up hills on the fsr. i still have my oem fan clutch i contemplated changing the fluids on, but i figure its alot easier to re & re 4 bolts than it is to mess around with clutch fluid.

is there much resistance when you spin it mounted?

I had the same experience and replaced my Eaton with a Blue Hub. My temps are exponentially lower as a result.

just went and spun the eaton (mounted). after a few turns, it loosened up and spins freely... I don't think that will work very well.
Either I didn't fill it enough or it is somehow wornout/broken.

I'm going to put the blue clutch back in.

This seems to be quite a common thing with the Eaton. With the clutch mounted I can spin it fairly freely. There is some resistance but not much. Nothing seems to have changed after the fluid replacement. I wonder if the spring is buggered and not letting the valve actuate when the temp is reached?

Anyway, looks like I'll be getting a new fan clutch as I'll be doing a little towing this summer.

d0ubledown, how long ago did you get your Hayden clutch? I thought I read here somewhere that the latest ones were pretty crappy.

Roughly what $ am I looking at for a new Blue hub vs a NAPA Hayden? Also, does the actual fan bolt up to all of these variations?

Thanks for the inputs guys:cheers:

My oil came in a little earlier than I expected and I changed it today. Did your eaton clutch actually say eaton? Mine didn't but it looks just like the eaton unit. 10k changed mine quite a bit, but like you all are saying mine also has lots of resistance for the first few rotations, then frees up. But it does push a lot more air than before and the fan is much louder. But it seems that the engine is actually running WARMER than it was before doing it. 193ish vs. 197ish.

No, mine didn't say Eaton on it but it looked exactly like those posted here. It also had the torx screws which I don't think any of the others have.
My truck is running between 185 and 195 most of the time. I think the fan is most effective when you are going slow. That is my concern. The temps are ok now but when summer hits and your stuck in traffic with the AC on or towing then that's when your going to want a well running fan.

i got it last summer. paid about 100ish after taxes with the CC discount. i read up on the haydens here as well, i think from landtanks thread regarding his blue hub one. he seemed to have no problems with it before he put the blue on. my truck was heating up pulling the trailer up some long grades on harrison west last summer, so i didnt want to bother with sourcing a blue one, so i just grabbed whatever was available the quickest. no problems so far after that with pulling the trailer in august up the hills with AC on.

Ok. Adding to this.

After being unsatisfied by the performance I took it apart and put doubled what I put in to began with. Success! It roars on start-up and you can hear it pushing mega air when it warms up. It turns off like it's supposed to after reving for a few sec. It also does not free up after a few rotations like it did when it was low on fluid Scan gauge says 190 almost constantly.

So if your eaton is still not performing well try adding more fluid.

I'll have to try adding more fluid. I sure didn't get much out during draining.

I added fluid to the 3 open ports until they came up to the level of the opening. How much fluid did you put in?

Thx for the update by the way.

I just did this on my Aisin fan clutch. They're pretty similar in operation. I had done quite a bit of research on Mud before tearing into mine. It occurred to me that measuring how much was drained was a wise idea. It may be too late for that now for you, but here is the interesting part. The old fluid that I had drained out didn't look like much, either, but later when I measured it - it was 45 ml. Not far from Kevin's (Tools R Us) normal 50 ml fill spec when he does one. The bottle that the new fluid came in had gradient marks on it and when I was adding new fluid, I had only put in 25 ml to bring it up to the level that was in the instructions in landtank's thread. That's when I decided to measure the old drained fluid. Boy, was I surprised! I had no problems adding the additional 20 ml to bring it up to what I knew I had drained out. I hope this helps you out and doesn't confuse you!

I added more 10K fluid (basically all the fluid Andy gave me) and even a bit of 7K fluid (just what I had laying around).
No idea how much is in there.

It does work stronger than the blue clutch. It can hold a rag to the grille. Doesn't seem particularly louder than the blue but that could be b/c my intercooler fan is going.

Don't know if it's helping anything though. Doesn't seem any different than before.

Are you guys cleaning the fins on the trans cooler, condenser and radiator? It does no good to have a roaring fan if there is debris blocking the flow of air.

if you get rid of your napa clutch PM me. Ill take it. :)
