Looking to add these wheels to my 90 SR5 extended cab pickup, my mechanic says they require special lugs with a longer or deeper shoulder? Has anyone else run into this issue?

I have both the 15 and 16 inch wheels in that style. AFAIK, both sizes have same mounting hole design and require the special lug nuts. At least, I have the lug nut sets that go with them and they’re identical.

The ones I have are 16in but they didn’t come with the lugs so had my mechanic order them and was just surprised at the cost but maybe I can find a set on eBay

Good idea. $6 a piece seems a bit steep.

I found a few sets on eBay for reasonable amounts of money. $100+ wrapped up in lugnuts Was too much for me to stomach.

Any idea what the part number is or measurement for the lugs looking on eBay and such but not sure want to make sure I get the exact set.

Something like this is what I needed. I just googled “Toyota lugnuts eBay” and poked around until I found something that looked right.

Check Craigslist. I see them occasionally for cheap.
Also hit up your local tire shops. Ask nice and you can probably score for cheap or free. ;)

Bought some new lugs pricey but look great

I can tell you that this 16” Toyota steel wheel (used as spare on 3rd Gen 4Runners and Tacomas of same vintage) DOES NOT fit on the front or back of a stock 1989 (first gen) 4Runner. Center bore is too small. The similar-look 17” steelie from the FJ Cruiser fit fine. This 16” would need a 2” spacer in front and a 1” spacer rear.

This 16” steel Wheel has the same issue, and also suffers from being the most hideous wheel Toyota ever made.

Still running the 15” OEM Land Cruiser (disc brake) Steel wheels with 31x10.50r15 as per below. I own the BFGs above and want a direct-fit 16” OE-looking steelie for them.

These appear to fit without issue. Front hub is same size as 89.
Ive never seen a Toyota wheel that wouldn't fit over the center hub?

Before you commit to 16s, I'd suggest you look at your tire options. Tire manufacturers consider 16s to be "truck" tires, hence everything is either 8 or above ply tires. Read: STIFF AF. I have 315 75-16 (35s) Nitto Terra Grapplers on 16" OEM 80 series alloys. I can run 0PSI (zero, as in remove the valve stem) and they barely bulge). They are 8-plys.

I'm changing to a American Racing 15" soon. Just done trying to get something else.

Always thought the same. Bought the BFGs on the directionals without a second thought. Bought the 16” steel wheel in the box without a second thought. Was shocked when neither would fit over the front Aisins or even over the small center of the rear.

Three of us were test fitting. Neither worked. Tried a 1” spacer on front...no joy.

The Land Cruiser and FJ Cruiser wheels fit fine. 🤷‍♂️

I’d guess the SFA front Aisin hubs are smaller in diameter than the IFS Aisins, but I don’t know that to be fact.

Interesting. I’ve never heard anyone argue against 16” and in favor of 15”...usually totally opposite.

I’ve considered selling everything I’ve collected (BFGs and the 5 steel
Wheels) and putting some 33x10.50 Maxxis Razrs on the current FJ-40 steelies...problem is one of the wheels needs goop around the lip to consistently hold air (I’d need to buy another wheel) and the logistics of selling the BFGs on directionals.

I’ve had a 3rd Gen with stock 16s and recently 17s and never noticed, of course the 98 came stock on 16s so I’ve never driven it with 15s..the first gen weights 200-300 pounds less, so that makes a difference, too.

You're right the general thinking is 16s better than 15s, but just look at what's offered in 16s and I've not been able to find anything in a 16" load range c.

I have a set of these: GEOLANDAR A/T G015 | Yokohama Tire Corporation in 235/85R16 on a '73 Chevy SB-SS 2WD and even though they're LR E's they ride quite nice. I want to put a set in that size or in 235/80R17 on the 4rnnr.

Finding a set of alloy wheels that I like in 16X6, 16X7, 17X6, or 17X7 with appropriate offset has been nearly impossible. There are a couple OEM 16X7's & 17X7.5's that I can tolerate, but for what they're asking for those I want to like them a lot more before spending that much. Lately I've been looking at trailer wheels. 16X6's in 6 x 5.5 are everywhere within that realm and they reportedlyall have a 4.25"-ish center hole. Most have a 0mm offset, which I haven't yet modeled but I think will work given the taller tire. Just need to find some that I like that will look period correct.

So confused. I mounted the spare 16” from under my 1998 4Runner and it fits like a glove on my 1989 4Runner. It seems identical to the wheel that failed to mount a few posts above...difference is the center bore is just over 4” where the new wheel (in the box) has a center bore just under 4”.
Anyone have any idea why there is a difference!?

Design change that came late. Made the hole smaller since late trucks no longer have a wheel hub that they need to fit over. Does Mr. T denote the part rev level in their part numbers? If so you should be able to figure out which revision you need.
