How does one change out the illumination bulb in the rear defrost switch on the early model version?

Pulled the switch out - no bulb access.

Tried to pull the switch apart but couldn't get the circuit board to come out the back.

It's the only switch on my dash that is burnt out.

PM Cdan, or Beno, they might be able to help you find your bulb

Looking at this picture from SOR, it appears that there is a plug of some sort and the bulb is behind that.

Bulbs aren't my issue - I have lots of Toyota bulb spares, I just can't physically find the bulb in the switch...

14AC is the little green condom that goes over the bulb. Lol

Seriously, no one has taken this switch apart?

You could look under that white plastic piece in your photo where the connector plugs on, the cover for the bulb might be hidden under there. One last idea, if you don't find any way to get inside the switch, could the bulb that went bad maybe be an LED.

I believe bulb screws in from the bottom of the button. Look for round screw-like part/hole - that's it. Replaced with ease last year, will look at it this weekend again if needed.
