Too far north. Too far east.
When I bought my FJ40 the PO gave me two sets of doors. This last week I noticed that the door handles were different. I was able to take one set completely apart, while the other set had a pivot on the handle that was pressed on with a pivot to the latch. Anybody know the history of these? When did they change? I noticed that the replacement door handles sold by CCOT are the kind with the pressed-on handle.

i have a milk crate full of those from 64 to 74 and every year in between and none look like the 1 on the left so it could be pre 64.im sure someone on here will know for sure good luck

I have one of each as well.... the one on the right looks just like the one that came with a door said to have come from a 65 do not know for sure but It also had a six screw inspection cover as well ?

I do like having the drivers side handle a bit foward makes for quick opening

I wish I had the same on the passenger side too :frown:

My 69 with a production date of 10/68 has the handles pictured on the right. I also have a set of the ones pictured on the left that came off an unknown year. I like the ones on the right as I can just push down on the handle to open the door.

My 71 came w/ the ones on the left. I bought replacements that look the same from CCOT.

What do you think of the CCOT latches?

They look good, have a nice grey finish on them. One handle did start to get a little sloppy, and I considered sending it back, but I was able to tighten it up with a bfh without harm. If I remember, the drivers side came fast, but the passengers took a couple of months. They came through.

Does anybody know if this part is available someplace, or if there is a generic application out there? See the red circle.

SOR Part number 124-50 Lock knob $6.69, or perhaps someone has one laying around if you advertise in the want section.

BDW, the right hand latch is the style that is original on my '64. The left hand is correct for my '70.

I prefer the earlier style. As has been mentioned, the rivets for the later style loosen up causing them to rattle. I think they redesigned them, though, because the single piece early style opens by simply pushing down, and a person might accidentally open the door and fall out at speed. The later style involves pulling up on the latch, less prone to accidents. Still. I've never had a problem with the early latch.

i looked at the actuall trucks and they have original doors the 64,65,69 70 and 71 all have the riveted latches the 73 has the bolted style .but none have the taper that is in the top part of the left latch they are all straight acrossed unless its a photo glitch and the arm doesnt look as long hope this helps good luck.

Guess it's possible mine's not original. Don't know for sure.

Thanks for the SORe part. I looked there but missed the knob.

That is a good point about leaning on the latch and opening the door. I didn't think of that.

removable is 60s style, riveted is early 70s. i like the non riveted better, not sure why they switched.
