If I want to put pre 74 rear axle shafts in an 81 housing, do I just use the pre 74 bearings and seals?

Are you changing the bearings and seals or using existing components?

my impression is he is wanting to run course birfs with whatever parts are called for on a later model axle housing.

old birfs won't fit with newer spindles/hubs, you'll have to use the old stuff, which will involve using the old knuckles/arms
