Hi,

I really could do with some help/advice on Dune Beige (416).
I am close to getting by BJ painted and am set on the Dune Beige color. But from looking at a lot of images Dune Beige can vary from a very light beige to a pretty nasty dark beige. It cant be just the sun light .. can it ?

I guess it depends on who is mixing it. It does vary a bit in light.

I restored my 40 a couple of years ago and choose Dune Beige too. Here a link to my photo gallery:

Lots of pictures

Hope it helps.

This chart sounds Dune Beige 416 1972 to 1975. Before that was Coronado Beige T451 and after that was Beige 464. Pictures in this thread are from cruisers that are earlier and later as well. Plus some I'm sure are repainted which explains differences in color besides just lighting. Currnetly waiting to get a copy of the chart in picture two to compare to the cruisers in picture three which are both original paint but neither should be Dune Beige (70 & 76).:meh:

The one in your second post looks like my truck which is Cygnus White. Definitely more offwhite than tan.
Look in my profile for another pic.

My 03/'77 shows a 416 color code , so don't always take those color charts to heart ...

Good point. I own a 73/76/79 but never drive them so forget about all the data on the VIN plates compared to the sixties. Would be interesting to make a paint chart off of real VIN plate info.

I guess my 76 would be 416. I'll have to check. It does list the transmission as M42:hhmm:

paint

thanks for the help and photos ... I'm getting a sample of the dune beige and will get a sample of the new Toyota sandstorm.
will be interesting to see how they look in 'real' life. might be a week or so before i get the samples but i'll post photos when done.
would hate to be st the end of a project and make a mess of the paint

I have noticed considerable color/shade variations in the Toyota colors depending on whether the paint was a basecoat/clearcoat or a single stage. To my eye, the single stage 2K urethane paints look more true to the original colors.

Thanks for the photos DeltaT .... amazing how beige can go from beige to butter colour to pearl white :)

LOL, my 40 started it's life as white and was painted red for service as a firetruck on an airfield. Then it was painted 'butter' yellow, not an original Toyota color, but it looked decent enough to drive it that way for a couple of years.
When the time came to do the full resto, I choose Dune beige (416) in a single coat which is slightly darker the 464 beige. Maybe not period correct (mine is from 1984) but I preferred that color. It turned out great and I have no regrets apart from spending way to much money. But I am keeping her so all is good.

Most of the toyota colors are greatly affected by sunlight and shadows.

And as stated, toyota made many beiges, that people often misstate. Not to mention the fact that there are variables when being mixed because different computers have different formulas and there can be human error.

My 06/77 FJ40 has a color code of 416 also. It had the original paint on it when I bought it. I had it painted except the dash because the paint was in perfect condition and the color you see matches it perfect.

Hi,

Can anyone comment on the visual difference between 416 and 464. My guy mixed up 464 and it came out (in my opinion) looking like the cruiser beige that is on the grey or darker side of the spectrum.

I am assuming 416 is more tan/yellow (because that is what I remember from the 90s when these things were around more)

I like the 464, but Dad seems to think it is too dark. This is for a complete stock re-build of a Feb 79 (thus the 464 choice-based off of chart)

thanks,
Ryan

I matched the interior dune beige paint on my 1974 40. Here are pics of finished product and paint formula. Happy with how it turned out.

Looks great, thanks. My apologies, I’m getting my paint codes mixed up above.
I had the body shop mix up both color samples. Going with the Dune 416. Will post pics of them side by side. The 464 is a great color too - in the shade; much too yellow in the sun imo. Honestly I could go either way but the wife doesn’t like the beige 464
