Just read a back issue of Petersons Offroad, December I think. There was an article on a fj45 that has a dual shackle setup on a SOA. What are the advantages of this I felt like the article didnt really explain. Anybody currently running it??

Oh and is there a performance difference with this vs. a reversal?

do you mean shackles at either end?

if so you'd need a full link setup to locate the axle then apart from that, it's just another way of having a spring...

the theoretical gains or only there if you used a spring designed to operate with that setup.
a cruiser spring generally is designed with a "fixed or swing" side and a "flex" side.
the center pin is offset and the leaf pack stacked tighter at the fixed end. this creates a swingarm effect and controls axle wrap. The shackle side is longer and the leaves more broadly spaced making it more flexible.
a dual shackle setup should be symmetrical on both sides of the spring pin for it to work best.

as for advantages, if set up right two shackles will allow more articulation than one.
this is also popular with the go fast guys because you can get lots of travel and a soft
spring rate at the same time. You will need to build a four link or there will be no way to locate the axle front to back

Very nice explanation, I concur.
