Dual exaust on a 2F? (1 Viewer)

So what does this dual exhaust down pipe give you?

In 1979 the FJ 40 came with a dual down pipe exhaust. Is this kind of a "Factory" version of a header? I realize that it is not a true header but it had to have some benefits since the engineers put it on.

I personally don't know, that's why I posted it.

I have one.

I think the biggest obstacle is routing. Look and see where the stock exhaust runs and try to imagine getting two sets of pipes there. I guess if you want to eliminate the skidplate....maybe. But two 2 1/4" pipes? I seriously doubt it.
I have the SOR 6-into-2 header and was tempted, but decided against it. Opening up the exhaust too much may have a deleterious effect on bottom end torque, too. I have heard many an inline six with a split manifold and true duals and they sound great, agreed. Just not easy or doable on a '40.

No doubt emissions related, not performance. I have heard that they were a troublesome POS design.

I've heard that as well. I heard the troubles were the connection to the CAT. Couldn't keep it together.

I was wondering if it would be easy to make this into a dual exhaust. Cut the bottom connector and start adding the duel pipes. Smog legal with dual cats, etc.

Thanks Ed, your speakin' my language now ;) These are exactly my questions. The heep has a 6-into-2 and very clean custom pipe work, tucked up nice. And the torque issue is my 1st concern........I'm just not sure

Well, it looks like the pipes somehow run above the skidplate and exit out before connecting to the cat, so if that is the case, I'd go for it. I imagine the two downpipes are 1 1/2-1 3/4" to fit under(above) the skidplate.
I never knew where the problem with that design was, but if it is at the cat, seems like you can work through it.

EDIT: On second glance it looks like they don't run two pipes under(over) the skidplate, but perhaps the cat IS under the plate????????? Great! More heat in the floorboards, but no need for a heat shield:rolleyes:

Not worth the trouble Dan. It flows from a single collector, so the benefit has already been reduced.

The design change was made for clearance issues. They had to run the catalytic converter OUTSIDE the framerail, and knew that a single exhaust pipe crossing underneath the frame would stick down WAY TOO LOW, which is why they went for two smaller pipes.

Rod Wiggins from SNLC used to run a dual exhaust with a Holley on a punched out 2F many MANY years ago. Sounded killer, but I could never tell that it ran all that much faster than any other 2F. He was always saying that there was something wrong with the Holley [which wasn't hard to believe] but I personally felt that the exhaust was totally inefficient at anything below WOT.

I am currently running a single 2.5 exhaust with a 40 series Flowmaster, and it makes about as much noise as I think ANYONE would want to hear. Anyone that was at SNT '06 prolly heard me ripping up the dunes and will attest to it. Heck, it even impressed Kowboy, who ain't so fond of Ty-oter engines.;)

I personally would have preferred a 2.25 system, but Mace made me a smokin deal on his old exhaust which was a straight bolt-up] I couldn't refuse.;)

The 2.5" flowmaster is the best sounding and performing exhaust in a 40 IMHO..

Mark is a hippy that likes to bitch IMHo :flipoff2:

BTW, I cannot count the number of times I had people comment on the nice rumble of a V8 that I had in my cruiser when I was running that exhaust.. :D

My 60 with a 5.0 mustang motor will be running a 40 series and a 3" system..

Haha, the trend has not ended. At least a dozen people came up to me at Rubithon last year saying 'How could you? Mark's gone over to the dark side!'

I also went by a bud's shop where the owners have their own 1/4 mile dragster. When I pulled out, the boss' son said to my friend "Now that's how a Landcruiser should sound" My bud says the guy's jaw dropped when he told him I still had a 6 under the hood.;)

Thanks again Jason.

That made me smile :D

my glass pack sounds cool but it is too loud IMO. My brother is running duel exast on his 2f with a edelbrock 500. He actuly went with the dual exast to quiet it down at idle. It sounds cool at wot but when at idle you hear the tranny/t-case over the exast.

back in the 70s one of the companies i think downey made a double header. i had 1 with 2 cherry bombs on my 70.it sounded good on the low end but you could here it coming a mile away . it was great going through town it seemed like the windows rattled after a while the local cop pulled me over everytime i drove it so they had to go good luck

Thanks for the opinions guys .  Keep 'em comin' !! Anybody have experience with dynomax ? And I'd like to hear the 2F/header/Flomax/2 1/2" single combo if anybody near me has it. :D

I've got a jeep scrambler with a 258 and dual exhaust. It's got a dual outlet, two peice header, so it just seemed logical to go dual. I'm running two vortex classic mufflers( muffler shop called 'em flowmaster knockoffs). I like the way it sounds- throaty, but not too loud. It sounds a lot like a 350. With a performance cam and big carb, it runs like a 350( when compared to the little f engine in my piggie!) I did a lot of research when I built my 258, and several reputable 6 cyl specialists (i.e. clifford performance) claimed dual outlet headers and dual exhaust with x pipe provide best flow and scavenging effect. I have never built a cruiser engine, so I don't know if anyone makes a dual outlet header for cruisers. With a single outlet header, don't know what kind of performance benefit you'll see.

Thanks, yeah, I believe Man-a-fre sells a 6 into 2 tuned header, I figured thats what I would use. What size pipe did you use, or what did those 6 cyl specialist recomend ? I't just does'nt seem ,to me , that the 258 and the 2F could be that dissimilar. I have'nt heard of any exaust manufacturer, address the 2F ,like you might find for the 258. If it works for one 4.2 straight 6 , would it not work for the other ?
