So what does this dual exhaust down pipe give you?

In 1979 the FJ 40 came with a dual down pipe exhaust. Is this kind of a "Factory" version of a header? I realize that it is not a true header but it had to have some benefits since the engineers put it on.
I personally don't know, that's why I posted it.
I have one.
No doubt emissions related, not performance. I have heard that they were a troublesome POS design.

Thanks Ed, your speakin' my language now These are exactly my questions. The heep has a 6-into-2 and very clean custom pipe work, tucked up nice. And the torque issue is my 1st concern........I'm just not sureI think the biggest obstacle is routing. Look and see where the stock exhaust runs and try to imagine getting two sets of pipes there. I guess if you want to eliminate the skidplate....maybe. But two 2 1/4" pipes? I seriously doubt it.
I have the SOR 6-into-2 header and was tempted, but decided against it. Opening up the exhaust too much may have a deleterious effect on bottom end torque, too. I have heard many an inline six with a split manifold and true duals and they sound great, agreed. Just not easy or doable on a '40.

I've heard that as well. I heard the troubles were the connection to the CAT. Couldn't keep it together.
I was wondering if it would be easy to make this into a dual exhaust. Cut the bottom connector and start adding the duel pipes. Smog legal with dual cats, etc.

The 2.5" flowmaster is the best sounding and performing exhaust in a 40 IMHO..
BTW, I cannot count the number of times I had people comment on the nice rumble of a V8 that I had in my cruiser when I was running that exhaust..

Thanks, yeah, I believe Man-a-fre sells a 6 into 2 tuned header, I figured thats what I would use. What size pipe did you use, or what did those 6 cyl specialist recomend ? I't just does'nt seem ,to me , that the 258 and the 2F could be that dissimilar. I have'nt heard of any exaust manufacturer, address the 2F ,like you might find for the 258. If it works for one 4.2 straight 6 , would it not work for the other ?I've got a jeep scrambler with a 258 and dual exhaust. It's got a dual outlet, two peice header, so it just seemed logical to go dual. I'm running two vortex classic mufflers( muffler shop called 'em flowmaster knockoffs). I like the way it sounds- throaty, but not too loud. It sounds a lot like a 350. With a performance cam and big carb, it runs like a 350( when compared to the little f engine in my piggie!) I did a lot of research when I built my 258, and several reputable 6 cyl specialists (i.e. clifford performance) claimed dual outlet headers and dual exhaust with x pipe provide best flow and scavenging effect. I have never built a cruiser engine, so I don't know if anyone makes a dual outlet header for cruisers. With a single outlet header, don't know what kind of performance benefit you'll see.
