I'm getting ready to hook up my winch and wanted to double check with you guys before I did anything. Looking under my hood (1hdt with dual batteries), it looks like the positive terminals of the batteries are tied together and each runs an independent ground. This makes me think that it shouldn't matter which battery I connect the winch to.

Is that right?

Thanks for the help,

If you still have the series/parallel switching system you need to make sure you connect it to the "main" battery in the system. On an HDJ81 this would be on the RH (driver) side. This is the same battery that feeds the vehicle with 12V.

What does that system look like? (Im 12v if that makes a difference) I will put the winch on that battery just to be safe.
