I'm in the midst of installing a 2nd battery in my 92 LJ78,which only came with one from the factory. The route I'm going is to have one battery #1 designated solely for startup, and to have the 2nd #2 for accessorys (headlights, stereo etc.) I have a Isolater to seperate the two batterys, and I undestand the concept of the isolater/diodes. The only issue I'm having is that my alternator/charging wire from the alternator charges my fuse panel inside (as well as a bunch of other stuff) before it reaches my battery, making the simple hook up of this wire to my alternator post on my isolater inoperatable. Because I need the 12 v from my battery to start up.

The idea is simple, just wondering what you guys have done to get past this problem?

There are 5 wires originally hooked up to my battery +

Large red - starter
small red - headlights
med black - glow plugs
small white/red stripe - ?
med white - charging/fuse panel power

Thanks, Joel.

Not too far off target but has anyone tried a battery separator to help run a second battery?

Im getting something similar fitted this week. My auto electrician says they are reliable.
Ill post up some details when its in;)

I have two 12volt batteries in Parallel.
No Isolater. I did my own install.
Gives more when your in a demading start situation.
Really spins up the motor when starting.
The batteries need to be identical (like a matched pair / same make etc.)). Not an odd pair.
I orderd the second battery tray from Japan 4x4.
It was a toyota part that fit right in.

Regards

Cut the Alt wire before it goes to the fuse box, run the starting battery off one of the isolator outputs, connect the fusebox wire to the other isolator output, use the exsisting wire from fuse panel to battery for connection to second battery.

I have never seen one like that, I like that seperator, you have the best of both worlds there! I think I will be adding this to my truck in the near future.

This is the factory set-up two batteries in parallel no isolator (my prado came stock like this). I don't like this set up, while you do have the added benefit of more cranking power and of course if you leave lights on by accident you have two batteries, which will keep em on for longer, but you will have two dead batteries eventually. The other problem with this set up is if one battery dies (say an internal short) it will drain the second battery too.

I fitted the Toyota f/glass battery tray for my 2nd battery. I think there must be a different front tray and a rear tray and I have 2 front. It sits a little higher and cannot be supported from underneath on the inner fender so I made a "foot" for it out of a 50mm long bolt ,a rubber chairleg knob and some 40mm dia washers.
Vince,my local auto sparky supplied and put the solenoid in and I put the cables and battery and battery tray in.
He recommended this type of solenoid because it is reliable. The ones with lots of fancy features usually dont last according to him.

This solenoid allows 2 battery start for my 1HZ (12V) but it will isolate one battery if Im running my fridge off the aux battery and the voltage drops to about 12.5 volt.
Im not running identical batteries,I have a Delco 660cca and a Bosch 770cca.
I also have a Delco deep cycle 100amp battery in a battery box which is normally used to run the fridge if the cruiser is not moving

I took it away down south and the track to Israelite Bay broke the OEM battery clamp on the front and caused the aftermarket rear battery clamp to come undone(it was a bad fit anyway).
I made it home with the batteries held in place with 4x bungee straps. I would be inclined to leave them there but it looks a bit:hillbilly:

The electrical side of it worked well. I ran my waeco CF50 fridge and lights for 5 days on the beach with no power outages:D

I was looking at some papers today and came across the battery tray stuff for the second battery tray.
Which is the rear most on the LJ78.
These are the part #'s for the original Toyota parts and the way I went.
