I've got a bit of dry rot forming on the plastic/rubber "accordion" hose that connects the air filter box to the turbo intake pipe (please pardon my terminology).

I sent a note to Turbo Glide (waiting to hear back) but I don't really want to order a part all the way from Australia if there is a universally available alternative.

I've gone some googling and searching on the forum but I don't have a good source for turbo parts. Any recommendations?

silicon ... ok that's the ticket. my google fu was stupidly weak on this one. i'll pull it off, measure and order online. i assume all vendor's parts will be equal on something like this?

Well, you made it sound so easy but here's my progress so far.

I called one tuner local shop but they only had 3" pieces. They suggested a diesel truck shop. I headed over to the industrial area nearby and checked three shops, each referring me to the next. The last shop suggested a big import parts shop on the other side of town and even called to confirm availability for me.

I headed over there and found that they did indeed stock couplings in my diameter but only in 3" and 36" ($80) pieces. I need ~6-8".

They recommended a local industrial hose & fitting supply shop but that place was already closed at this point.

I kinda want to see & hold the part so I know exactly what I'm getting but this is turning out to be remarkably/stupidly difficult.

I carried the turbo pipe into each shop with me so they could see exactly what I was looking for.

The hunt continues tomorrow. Any Sacramento area recommendations would be gratefully accepted.

You don't need silicone - it'd be a waste of your money since that hose is unpressurized.

Use this:

$20
Amazon.com: Spectre Performance 8741 Black 3" Air Duct Hose: Automotive

(or $12 here: http://autoplicity.com/products/353...tent=353674NOFITMENT&utm_campaign=GSNOFITMENT)

Those are also sold at Kragen/OReilly's, etc.

If you prefer 2.5" dia use these adapters:

http://www.amazon.com/Spectre-Performance-8751-Intake-Coupler/dp/B000630B1O/ref=pd_sim_auto_5

EDIT: Tho, if you're dead set on silicone (because it IS a higher quality hose) siliconeintakes.com actually has a fairly cheap 2' section for $40 (2.5") or $50 (3"). e.g http://www.siliconeintakes.com/prod...id=46&osCsid=85f6d0530da641e7c4e9d1b53c91ee65

Yeah, what Amaurer said. I used that Sceptre tubing on my snorkle to 80 series air cleaner assembly project in my fj40.

It's 2.5" diameter and 7.5" long.

I am kind of afraid a silicon piece wouldn't be flexible enough or would be prone to kink. Is that an issue? There is a very slight bend at play here.

I'm fine with using something cheaper and suitable but those links to specre/amazon parts look like much flimsier versions of what I have now.

Maybe it doesn't matter.

I just called two more shops (by googling diesel performance) and they said they didn't know where I could find any plastic/rubber duct or silicon hose in town. This seems strange to me.

Well your original hose is the one with dry rot, so thats not a very good standard of comparison for "flimsiness."

The silicone hose may tend to flatten if you bend it. Plain rubber might be better in that case, plus you could use a hump hose like this to take care of the bend:

Hump Hoses: Intake Hoses, IntakeTubing, and Intake Clamps

If you want to go with plain rubber (e.g. like radiator hose, but bigger) look at McMaster, they have lots of options, like this for example:

McMaster-Carr $13/ft

Ducting is hard to find over the counter, I've had the same fun that you are. You're making this hard on yourself by being so picky and trying to source it locally. Its just a hose, order some and be done with it. :D

With all of the industrial/trucking service shops, performance gas & diesel shops and so forth you'd think this wasn't so complicated.

Everyone I talked to acted like I was looking for parts for my spacecraft, that is until I called Capital Rubber Co. I just picked up a 12" piece of 2.5" marine exhaust hose and some heavy-duty clamps for $30.

I think this will be just overkill enough w/o being exorbitant :)

Thanks for all the tips. Next time I'll just order in advance but I really didn't want to wait for shipping in this case.

For those in the future who will be searching for intake tubing, try someplace that has woodworking power tool supplies. I got mine from Western Tool Supply here in Albany and they are spread out all over the WA OR ID, and maybe into CA area.

I'm not sure if there is anything in a 2.5" size, but I used a corrugated plastic 4" sawdust vacuum tube on my Chev 6.2 diesel pre-filter. What I got looked similar to the universal radiator hose on the outside, but was smooth on the inside. It was stiff enough not to collapse, but did have some flexibility to it.

I declared success too soon. The turbo pipe is 2.5" but the air-cleaner side is slightly larger, perhaps 2-5/8". The 2.5" marine hose I bought won't slip over the end.

I'm looking for a 7-1/4" long rubber hose that is 2-5/8" ID on one end and 2-1/2" ID on the other.

I don't see any Western Star dealers nearby. Nothing in amaurer's links fit the bill.

This is the closest I've found but I'm afraid it's a bit large diameter on the big side and it's only 4" long - I need 7-1/4".

Amazon.com: HPS 2.5" - 2.75" (63mm - 70mm) Reducer Coupler Silicone Hose x 4" Length Black: Automotive

Just use a 2.75" piece of hose. It'll smash down just fine with the clamp on it.

Or wrap some electrical tape or sheet rubber around the small fitting to build it up a bit.
