So Ive been in the market for a 40 for a while now and just made a startling discovery :bang: It seems from the pictures that in 1970 Toyota changed the style latch holding the windshield up. In 69 an older it just seems to be those two larger latches mounted to the dash....so how is it done on a 70 and up? Ive torn through the pics and I just cant figure it out and I dont have access to a newer than 70 vintage to poke around

Thanks

its just a couple of nobs that un-screw and it folds down. if i was at home id post some pics.

Big screws with plastic knobs..

Cutoff was 67 for the big latches. 68 and newer have screws w/ black plastic knobs at both ends of the dash.

On the newer ones its under the dash pad at each end and the 83 BJ42 only has bolt heads no knobs.

ahhh HAA!!! Anyone want to chime in on the strength of each style? Can a later model be easily converted to the older latch style...got to admit those old latchs are pretty snazzy stuff considering my buddy has to undo about 8 bolts of different sizes in his yj H#@p to drop the windshield. Thanks for the responses :)

The old ones are as tough as nails.

I honestly don't think the screw-type ones have the holding power of the beefy latches, but I also don't think any person with anything more than a brain cell would try and apply serious pressure to their frame. Those latches look friggin sweet, though.
They're both good setups, though, the knobs are nice cause they don't take up too much space, and you can freak out misinformed passenders by pulling them all the way off, and pretending to freak out while moving at freeway speeds. ("NO! the knob fell off; OH GOSH!")

I remember reading somewhere that dropping the winshield isnt the best idea. The seal can become weak and when you go to put the winshield back up it never seems to go back together quite right. (leaks)

Someone correct me if I am wrong

I very rarely run topless so I don't put the windshield down very often but I have done so on a few occaisions and it has never caused any problem. That's both on the '76 I used to have and on the '79 I now have.

why should it not fit back up

I rarely flip the windshield down, but did yesterday and had no issues :meh:

Alaskan_IB - I don't think it is the seal's fault that a leak is created - I think the cause of the leak is from the hinges getting damaged/bent because they're rusted/seized from years of non-use. When someone gets too excited and just jerks haphazardly on the windshield the first time they lay it down, the hinges bend. Then, when they put it back up, the water-tight seal is lost. To avoid this, spray the hinges with WD40 or similar product and let it sit for a few days - then GENTLY work the hinges to let the shield down....

I've had mine up and down a few times. I also did the wd40 thing and didn't have any problems. I take care to lower it from the pass side so I can help the wiper wires through without binding or tearing. The seal has little ridges in and around it to help trapped water down some drain holes in the body. Whe I raise it, I do so from the pass side to tuck the wiper wires back in the frame so they don't get pinched.

Hi All:

I drop the windshield frame on my FJ40 when 'wheeling whenever the weather cooperates! ;)

My rig (11/73 FJ40) came with the plastic screw knobs. I retro-fitted mid-1960s era windshield frame hinges because they were faster to deal with than the screw knobs. Not a very "clean" install but it works.

Regards,

Alan
