Just wondering if anyone has a file/link to some plain english regulation guidlines for setting up Daytime Running Lights. I've just added another JDM to the fleet and need to rig up some DRL's. I'd like to rig them up to run the fog lights or even better the city lights rather than the low beams but just want to make sure that is acceptable. And is it just the headlights that need to be illuminated? (ie no marker lights out back need to be lit up as well?)

Also just wondering if anyone has plain english guidlines on what the AS1,AS2 etc marking on the window glass mean and what to do if a piece(s) do not have that stamp (other than replace it!). I have seen other JDM's around BC without the AS* stamps but I wonder if they were just inspected prior to the crackdown.

found this on wikipedia re DRL's....
Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 required DRL on all new cars made after January 1, 1990. Canada's proposed DRL regulation initially was extremely similar to regulations in place in Scandinavia, with an axial luminous intensity limit of 1,500 candela, but automakers objected, claiming it was too expensive to add a new front lighting device, and would increase warranty costs (by dint of increased bulb replacements) to run the low beams. After a pitched regulatory battle, the standard was rewritten to permit the use of reduced-voltage high beam headlamps producing up to 7,000 axial candela, as well as permitting any light color from white to amber or selective yellow. These changes to the regulation permitted automakers to implement less-costly DRL, such as by connecting the high beam filaments in series to supply each filament with half its rated voltage, or by burning the front turn signals full time (except when actually flashing as turn indicators).
So my take on that is I can use ANY light at the front of the car regardless of colour as long as it puts out LESS than 7000 candela.

Agree/Disagree??

Well what kind of JDM did you add to your fleet??

Toyota Celsior (aka Lexus LS400)

I'm thinking of rigging up the DRL's to the clear park/city lamps to the extreme right and left of the headlights. Was originally thinking the center fog lights but wasn't really excited about having 'obnoxious to the eyes' yellow lights on at all times. Don't want it rigged to the headlights either since H4 bulbs are not that cheap or easy to locate.

Picture is from Japan prior to shipping. Front spoiler disapeared along the way (grrr) and the Einstein's on the boat secured my car by the front tie rods and the rear control arms buggering some of them all to hell (grrr x100).

Nice looking car..
Is this going to be the daily driver then.?
Or have you other plans for it?

I'm still looking for what they did to my truck to get the DRL to work..
I'd like to undo what they did and start over and make the lights beside my head lights the DRL's. I just can not see useing a quartz holegen head light as a DRL.
So far have found one connection in the engine compartment. If I pull the fuse in the square acc box the head lights go out, but then none of the warning buzzer head light "left on" features work..

Still looking.

Yeah this will be taking turns with the Surf as my daily driver as well as filling the role as the 'long distance highway cruiser'. :)

I feel your pain on trying to reverse engineer what someone else has rigged up for your DRL's. Its hard enough to remember how our own designs are set up once a few months go by... I picked myself up one of those $30 label maker machines at Staples a while back and its been great for helping keep track of all the various relays and wiring I have added to the Surf.

Cool idea the label maker..
The Celsior probably cruises very well on the highway.. would probably be a bit more comfortable as well.
Good luck with it..

Hi guys, does the January 1, 1990 build date apply to JDMs too? Or is it every imported vehicle regardless of age? Very close to buying a Mitsu Pajero(swear all you want :p)

What I was wondering about was the requirement for daytime running lights. I have a feeling I'm gonna need to go over this Pajero with a checklist to make sure all my ducks are in a row, unless I get my invite to the JIBC from VPD sooner rather than later :D.

It is pretty easy.
Anything built on/after Jan 1 1990 needs daytime running lights.
Its an easy cheap install. Lordco sells kits, and so does Canadian tire.
Probably would take 30-60min and $25

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks Nick. I think my Pajero might be a late 1989 build, but that shouldn't be a big deal either way. What I was worried about was stuff like the DOT headlights etc.

Welcome to our DOT club CLEAD. :)
Make sure you check the whole thing over when it comes to DOT .
I have just recently found that my tires are not DOT not even the spare.
Just another thing to add to my list..

Also the RHD headlights should be removed and replaced with LHD headlights and re aimed.

I have heard though (I can not remember where) that some provinces are adopting the E standards.. Am I right here...???
I just wish Ontario would.. All though that wouldn't help the tail light issue on the LJ78 at all..:D

:grinpimp:

Thanks Wayne Knew I had seen it ..
