Drilling out stock rim lug nut holes, to fit stock lugs. Is this a bad idea? There will be comparable amount of material to my other set of rims. Thoughts.

Wouldn't stock wheels fit on stock lugs? Why are you drilling them?

The used set of 80 rims , I believe are off an earlier 80. When I align the holes to slide the wheel on- no problem, but when I use the original lug nuts they tighten up, leaving a 1/4" gap between the bottom og the lug nut head and the surface of the rim.

I'm not quite following this - a picture would help.

Anyway, call me crazy, but I think I'd get get the right set of lugnuts before I'd go drilling on the rims. IIRC, at some point the 80s went from cone-faced lugnuts to a flat faced nut with a washer - or vice versa.

A picture would help....sorry- I am posting from work. The lug nuts that I have are "flat", and the "oversized" lug hole on the 40th 80 rims allow the shaft of the lug nut, I am guessing, to protect the threads of the lug nut. :bang:

You need conical lug nuts on the earlier FJ80's. Good luck!

The black lug nut is the stock 40th lug nut for the aluminum wheels. The chrome nut works with the steel wheels.

The lug nut I have is pictured on the right. Would C-Dan have what i need?

just to confuse the situation a bit more I am running the "flat" nuts with a steel wheel, but I am using the conical end of the flat nut as a conical nut... :D

Thanks for everyone's input to help clear-up a muddy situation :hmm:.

The conical nuts can be had as OEM Toyota or at any auto parts store...

watch out for aftermarket, the cone angle may not be OK

I stripped 3 of my lugs last time I did some work and I went all over the place looking for 'oem' type lugs. Couldn't find anything so I had to go through Toyota to make sure I got the correct ones...it wasn't cheap.

CruiserParts.net 888-941-3450, used 2./lugnut, threw a couple in just because, shipped and on the way. Thanks Mud
