So, being a rookie, I had no idea about the dowel rings when I pulled my head. I saw two rings attached to a tag in my "spare parts" box when I got it back from the machine shop, but no mention and I thought it was just a paper weight for the tag with my info.

Anyway, I used a hoist to put the head back on, everything aligned on the first shot beautifully and torqued right down, no problem. Now, after reading some threads on here I found out about these little puppies.

My question is, how screwed am I? Will I need to pull the head and replace these things, or just run it without?

Not a big deal.

But if you are not too far along in the assembly, it is no big deal to unbolt the head and install them. The gasket should not be damaged by this and can still be used if it is not.

Thanks Mark, she's fully assembled and running again, so I'll probably opt to leave them out. I guess I just got lucky that it lined up so easily.
