Hey guys, didn't realize that this was going to be such a big deal but I'm having huge troubles finding part numbers for a 1981 BJ60 Double Cardan front drive-shaft. I believe one of the U-Joints is failing and looking to rebuild. I noticed a lot of people saying to take it to a shop....but I'd rather take on the project if its do-able.
I've read that the end caps can be different sizes on the same ujoint as well?

any help is much appreciated! wanna get back out there in 4wd!

Can't help, but I'm subscribed...will need this myself someday.

John

Mostly the U joints, possibly a rebuild kit. that's a super helpful website, but lacks a couple part numbers it seems....
or I'm garbage at reading it

thanks boba!

still looking for ujoint part numbers....

DC joints are not rebuildable from Toyota. They do not provide a kit like they do the end joints (in this case, 04371-36030).

In this case you would need to buy the whole thing.

Which unfortunately you cannot since it is discontinued.

That said, a quality driveshaft shop should be able to rebuild the DC joint.

You might talk to Kurt at cruiser outfitters. He can probably get what you need.

Out source it and save your labor for other projects

Awesome feedback!

Call John at Radd Cruisers in Duncan. 250-746-8977

I'll be calling radd cruisers today for sure

Gave napa a call, waiting for a call back. I know napa wants $800 + for the driveshaft
Sooooo we'll see what their kit may cost

I looked it up out of curiosity. FWIW, my cost is $444 + $60 core USD. It looks like they should have some wiggle room to come down, but that's still a lot of money for one.

Maybe call torfab in Seattle, they may have what you need.

Those u-joints are expensive. So 2 for an end is going to be a lot. Don't even think of replacing driveshaft with
new, that's crazy. There was a guy, Mikes Drivelines in Nanaimo. Mike only does driveshafts. Now I've heard he sold
the business, but it may still be open under new name. PM diesel cruiserman as he is the one with the info on this.
I had 2 DC driveshafts made by Mike 15 yrs ago for my SOA FJ40, I've got them on both shafts. Roughly (by memory)
$50/ u-joint. He was $40 for each cut and weld to resize the shafts. But computer welder, precise work, and completely
balanced. The tube is cheap ~ $20-40 if you needed to lengthen. Anyhow, I'm not home so I can't run into town and look
for you. Good luck

ya wasn't going to get a new one, its a perfectly good driveshaft, just one of the ujoints is past its prime. I'm 99% sure its just the ujoints that need attention. PO said he rebuild it.
gave RADD a call but no answer. I'll poke around in Victoria and if not maybe I'm taking a trip to Nanaimo. get some skiing in while i'm up there

thanks Jon!

****Update**** Solved!!

So I sourced the parts from Island Torque Converter & Driveshaft in Victoria
Royce was super helpful and got the parts to me next day.

Degreased, stripped and epoxy painted the whole assembly (careful to not paint ujoint sockets)

Opted not to get the ball in the centre due to cost and it seemed fine how it was

Thanks for all the help guys
