So i have a new to me LC that needs some TLC, one of the projects is fixing the rear passenger door that found a post in a parking garage. https://photos.app.goo.gl/49yn7npjC20QUqfa2 Anybody have any recommendations? I know i can probably find a door or skin and fix that, but i figure i need to learn how to use a stud gun and pull it all out. It's smashed right up to the impact bar, but from inside the impact bar does not seem to be damaged.

Current thought process:
  • sand door down to bare metal
  • use HF stud gun and pull dent
  • pound high areas with hammer
  • grind off studs / weld / patch holes
  • fill / level out with body filler
  • prime
  • paint
I don't know if it will be possible to get back to 100%, but i figure i can get it really close.

Thanks
KO

I'm not a rocket scientist but my question to you is WHY?

Just find another door and have it painted to match.

You'll likely spend more time and money being body man for probably lesser result. With your extra time and money work on replacing hoses greasing knuckles or other mech endeavours.

Totally agree with the time argument, but i would like to learn how to fix dents like this, just in case it happens on a quarter panel or somewhere else that is hard to replace. My expectation is that i will spend several hours, not be happy with the result and end up getting a door and painting it to match.

I won't tell another man how to spend his time :)

This forum will help you with LC stuff but this is a body shop question I'd also check body shop diy forums.

Does anybody actually sell door skins for the LC? That would also be an easier route. No LCs to be found in the yards in my NW corner of the US.

After several hours i dove in and tried to repair the door. Had to purchase a HF stud gun, body filler, paint and clear. Total set back was about $300 and roughly 8 hours of my time. It's not 100% perfect, but darn close. There is one small dent that i missed, and there is a very small line on part of the door where you can see the body filler line. Keeping the body lines straight with the body filler was the hardest part.

Nice work. I know it's not easy to find a LC door without the LX cladding holes (at least here in Canada). You have to deal with a lot of different angles on those rear doors, everything seems to swoop back to the handle and down to the dog leg. Once you install the door moulding, door handle and dog leg moulding your not going to notice any imperfection. You see them because your looking for them! Great job! Thanks for sharing the progress pictures. What's next on your list?

Upholstery - front seats and middle seats. Once that is completed, we start to get into suspension, bumpers etc.
