I did a search for this and found a thread titled "Door panel removal fj40". The thread is closed for some reason, and there is a post in it that needs to be corrected. It said when removing the window crank to slide the rag between the plastic washer and the panel to remove the clip. This is incorrect, you need to slide the rag in between the crank and the plastic washer in order to remove the clip. This is evidenced in the diagram showing the clip between the crank and the washer. Why the thread was closed, I dont know or understand. Anyway, to anyone searching this topic, thats the correct method!

I'm looking at possibly taking the door panels off on my 77. Did a search on how to do this. This thread is the closest thing I found. Anyone know how to find the thread referenced above? Or have any advice on the best way to do this?

I'm trying to eliminate rattles in the doors. My other issues is that there seems to be some play in the door latch system. I have the striker on the door frame adjusted all the way in and I put some extra temporary cheap w/s on the doors that I picked up from Home Depot. The doors now stick out from the rest of the truck and there is still some play in the latch. Do I need new latches in the door or is there something else I'm missing?

I don't think there are any gaskets in the corners of the door openings. I didn't realize there should be what do these look like? I have adjusted the strikers all the way in.

I had a rattle in the outside door handle, I put a zip tie around the stud that come out of the door latch that connects to the outside handle to take up the slop. There is also some adjustment between the 2 parts that may be adjusted. Did this and the rattle is gone. Did by a new OEM handle....which ain't cheap ($80) but don't see the need to install it now.

Windows can also rattle if the door guides(vertical things windows ride in) are old or missing

The rag may work but I'd suggest avoiding some headaches by using something lie this:

rag is the approved method per the FSM, it works great and normally the clip does not go flying. also when putting handle back, put the clip all the way on...and just press the handle on.

Thanks for the replies. But I think maybe I'm missing something. I'm not even sure where to start. How do I remove the panel? Does it just pop out? Should I just put a plastic thing between the panel and the door and pry it off until it pops? What is a rag? Is it some sort of tool or just a plane ol rag? Sorry if I seem dumb here.

i use the cheap tool ,it works fine to push the clip off . yes gently pop or pry the panel off .
like Landpimp says when putting window crank back on just put the clip back on the crank and then push the
crank back onto its post it just pops on

Ok. Thanks Weber Sarge.

I finally got around to taking the door panels off and having a look. Wow. Almost 2 years since I first considered doing it. Got kinda busy I guess. Thought I would post a couple pics to help the next guy.

The rag between the plastic washer and the window crank was definitely the way to go easier then I thought it would be. Also used some cheap plastic prybars from Harbor Freight. If you look closely in one of the pics you can see the the little gold snap pin peeking out from behind the window crank. Just put a flat head screwdriver in there and it came right out.

After all that it appears that most of my rattling and squeeking is coming from where the windows ride in the track. I need to put some new window felt in. Where is the best place to source this? Do I just need to get the whole door weatherstrip kit from SOR.com?

I was able to put the window cranks back on in such a way that they don't ride against my knee in the fully up or fully down position. Should have done this years ago.

I bought all the door felts from Cruisers Corps years back. Unfortunately they are still sitting in my basement waiting to be installed. Just spray some silicone on the lower felts when the window is down. It should take care of your window squeaks.

Hm. Might try that. Driver's side is pretty loose though and kinda rattles more then squeeks. But might work well for the passenger side.

I drove around for a whole summer with a pencil shoved in the window slot to stop the rattles and squeaks. It should do the trick. If I ever get the time to pull top off I’ll fix the right way.
