Title is pretty much it. It's an '85, with the original 2F, and I'm planning on doing the plugs/wires/cap/rotor, air/oil filters, and an oil change.

Which parts are worth the OEM markup? Which ones can I go cheaper with?

Fuel & air filters. Compare to vatozone crap to see the difference.

PCV valve. Compare to vatozone crap to see the difference.

Use the Wix 51773 or Carquest 85773 oil filter. It's big, real big.

Edit: Actually, it's easier to list the aftermarket parts that are possibly equal or better than oem:
Spark plugs (NGK or ND)
PCV grommet
VC gasket
Wix dump truck oil filter
Felpro graphlex manifold gasket
Melling camshaft
Clevite engine bearings
Timken wheel bearings.

That's about all I can think of.

That's a good list. Maybe somebody should sticky it. Thanks!

I always use the WIX 51515 oil filter. What is the one you listed off of?

I like the OE Cap and Rotor - I haven't seen all brands of aftermarket, but the big brands like Bosch and Standard seems less robust, plus I like the cap in charcoal :D

OE Fuel filter is Kyosan, but I don't think available here aftermarket

OE Air Filter is Denso # 143-2102

Also confer with FJ40Jim on the BIG wix:

So, basically, the filter has an extra 25%+ surface area on the inside, and it ought to take at least that much longer to fill up with grit?

And it provides more cooling (oil filters are thin and shed a fair amount of heat).
And adds another 1/2qt of capacity.

Thanks for the part number on the big Wix filter!

I am using 51515 currently. Pretty good I'd say.

I am using the Wix fuel filter O'Reilley's has on hand.

To my knowledge I have an original distributor cap, It has no cracks so is that okay?

The reason I know I have an original distributor cap is because my spark plug wires were stamped 1984 when I replaced them a few years ago :hillbilly:

Replaced them with OEM, I like them a lot.

Damn its huge!

Toyota forks and Ford dumpers.

ah cool. I will add that to my list

So if I use the "big" Wix filter, my FJ-60 would take a total of 9 quarts of oil, as opposed to 8.5 quarts? With 9 full quarts, would I be asking for seal or gasket leaks since the engine is a bit over-filled?

Thanks,
Zack

And yet again, the forum is reminded of why Jim C. is our MVP (most valuable poster).

I will second that! And he is a Hella'va nice guy to chat with in person as well, and the quality of his work is top notch.

The oil sump is not overfilled. The extra oil is stored in the filter because of the anti-drainback valve.

And YOUR engine will still leak somewhere because it has elventeen jillion miles on it. ;p

I was looking closer at the engine today, and it looks as if the "big" filter would hit the spark plug wires, or at the very least rub against them......
