Does the rear crossmember count as soft metal?

I want to get some drilling done for my rear bumper build while I've got time to kill here. I know there are heavy-duty bits down at my school metal shop (which are what I've been using) but I can't get back there until tomorrow. I've got a bit set rated for wood, plastic and "soft" metal but I've got my bet on the rear crossmember not being all that soft...

You could use the bits you have but they probably wont be worth a s*** when your done

Nothing special abut the rear crossmember. Just mild steel. No need for anything special to drill it.

But, those bits are probably meant for AL or brass, copper, stuff like that when they talk about "soft" metals.

Mark...

Boo. How typical. I should go see if the neighbors have any tools I can break.

How many holes are we talking about?
For a few holes I would think you would be alright
As MarkW said the cross member is not that heavy of gauge steel
I do stuff like that when I have to
You can always go by another replacement bit sometime down the line if need be

Just two holes. I hate busting up my own stuff so I can wait until tomorrow when I can bust the school's :D

Oil on the bit and surface to be drilled makes all the difference in the world...

also drilling a smaller pilot hole first will make life a lot less painful.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips.
