I recently had my starter go out on my 78 fj40 and had a fj62 starter lying around. Starter bolted up just fine however when I went to start it I got nothing. I ran the positive battery cable to the large post on the starter and the hot ignition wire to the small plug on the starter. I have one more wire where do I hook it up at? fj40 has two small post coming of the solenoid fj62 only has one ?????

I resolved the problem and WOW! what a difference this starter makes. Thanks

Hi All:

"Mdarko," what did you do to resolve the problem?

Thanks.

Alan

I hooked up the wrong wire going to the starter so it wasn't getting power when I turned on the ignition. Unfortunately now I am having other starting issues. When I tried to start it last time the small wiring loom to the alternator melted. Never ending battle

Check your ground. Battery- to block or frame then a jumper from there to block or frame. Ensure the alternator has a good ground through the mounting bracket (prone to rust) An alternative is to run a 10ga ground wire to the case directly. Also ensure the regulator is grounded to the body.

Which wire melted? The white wire with black stripe? If so it's your main ground...

White wire w/black stripe and yellow wire are both fully intact. I can't remember what color the third wire was and all of the covering has burned off it. Any pics of the small pigtail (wiring harness) going to the alternator on a 78 FJ40? When I took my alternator off I did not disconnect the battery and accidentally grounded the single wire going to the alternator causing some sparks. I have since installed a brand new alternator however have yet to attach the wires to it. One other thing is that when I turn my key on my stater will barley crank over the engine. This is when the pigtail going to the alternator starts to smoke. Battery is brand new and fully charged.

Hello I have a 1975 fj40 with a Chevy 350 and I’m having trouble finding the right wires to go to the starter can you help please

It's hard to say. Once somebody does a sbc swap they may have gotten creative with the wiring. The starter should have the large positive cable coming from the battery attached to the solenoid. If they kept it some what stk. There should be a black wire with a white stripe going to the small spade/stud on the starter solenoid marked with an S next to it. The blk/white stripe wire activates the starter when the key is in the start position.
