Does anybody know if a 60031 cylinder head will interchange with a 60050? In other words would a 60031 casting number head work on an F engine that had a 60050 head on it? Or is it for the F.5 exclusively?

it wpuld be easrier if you knew what the heads were off of .you would have your answer already

The 60031 would be off a 1970 fj40. The 60050, assuming it is the stock head, is off of a 9/1972 fj40. I am wondering if the only difference is the 60050(9/1972) has the air rail ports machined into it, but is the same otherwise.
Something I did find was that SOR lists heads for sale that fit 1968-9/1972 and another 9/1972- 9/1973 and then one for 9/1973-12/1974 which I know to be the F.5. There is that weird 1 year stretch in there 9/72-9/73 Which I am unsure of for interchangeability with the earlier 1970 60031 head. Anyone know?

@Marn0 I commonly see the 74 engine reffered to as F.5 or 1.5F. The carb on that engine has a mechanical secondary like 70-72 F’s. Main difference of the F.5 is the carb went away from accelerator cable in favor of linkage type

The rockershaft is lubed via the external line on 8/73-older engines. So it is possible the 68 head would work on the 73 block, if it is prior to 8/73.

It is possible to go the other direction, installing a 74 head on a 72 block for example. It requires reusing the early external oild rockershaft assembly and ignoring the holes drilled for the later internal oiling setup.

The 60050/51/52 heads from the F1.5 have the oiling system same as a 2F - oil gets to the rockers through a circuit through one of the rocker towers that the 60031 does not have, so as a straight bolt-on replacement, I do not think so...

I believe @65swb45 www.marksoffroad.net had a 60050 head in inventory if you haven't found one yet.

I see though, you have the 60031 for sale now, on ebay :p

Let’s keep this simple. If the engine block in question uses a copper line to feed the two-piece rockers, you can bolt virtually any cylinder head to it that you plan to bolt a two piece rocker assembly back on. Compression will vary widely depending on which head you use, but it can be done.

If the block does not use a copper line to feed the rockers (I.e. it’s internally fed) you need a 60050 or higher casting number head, which will have the obvious third hole under the fourth rocker arm stand (in a one-piece assembly)to service the rocker assembly internally. Again, compression numbers will vary.

Now SOMEBODY is going to get on here with their ‘hole in the valve cover’ morphodite hybrid 2F block, 1F rocker system, but that’s just a :hillbilly:.

Sam, if somebody is looking to purchase your cylinder head, this analysis is more useful than the fact they just happen to be pulling off a 60050 head.
