I am having an issue with the Centerforce Clutch in my diesel swap not disengaging. I am using 85-87 slave, early longer clutch fork, Centerforce clutch, Pressure plate and throwout bearing and it seems like it just will not disengage the clutch even with full adjustment.

Any ideas?

Here is the pics of clutch install:

I followed the instructions from AA on their website in regardss to shortening the slave rod to get proper placement of the throwout bearing to pressure plate surface but it seems to me that now I dont have enough throw to disengage the clutch.

Again any ideas or help is appreciated.

Make and adjustable push rod, or get one from a pre 84 as they are adjustable already, then you can dial it in to be just right.

Clint,

Not sure of how to help you with the clutch yet, but here is a picture of my swap at the same stage. Notice how far my pilot tool sticks out of the pressure plate. Measure the pilot tool you used and we can compare.

Also, my clutch was a chevota design to work with the swap. Not sure which slave I have, but it does have the adjustable rod. My clutch fork has the spring mount, so it is the earlier style.

Let me know.

I agree the earlier rods were adjustable. I think the change was in 1985. Mike

I have the early model adjustable rod. I have it at full end of adjustment to the point where the clutch is now slipping and making a horrible sound but still NOT disengaging!!

Doug,

I used the tool that cam with my Toyota clutch when I rebuilt it for the 5 speed. From tip to end of splines it's 3 1/4 inches and overall it's 6 from tip to end of ring. When installing I had no issues with getting it out and made sure to torque to specs in a cross pattern to keep the plate/ pressure plate interface flat.

As far as the clutch itself its the Centerforce system designed for Chevota swaps including the throwout bearing.

So my question is still does the 81-84 slave actually have more throw?

Clint,

I can't find my pilot tool to measure and no one is home to help measure the slave throw, so will try this afternoon.

The answer to your question is going to be found in the ID of the two slave cylinders. I think they are the same, but which ever is smaller will have a longer throw. Likewise you could use a MC with a larger bore to achieve the same thing. You might look at mini truck hardware too. If your release arm is a two-position affair like old Chevys were, you want the inner position.

Thanks for looking Doug I appreciate it.

Lehi, I am using factory toyota fork from 81-84 60 series.

Maybe help DDX my symptoms.

I can shift through the gears when the truck is not running. I can start the truck with it in neutral but cant shift into gear while running. It does want to shift into reverse but only grinds when I do. I can also start the truck with clutch in while in gear and get the truck to die with letting out clutch with brakes on but can't get it to shift out of gear till I shut the engine down. Even then pulling it out of gear I have to use a lot of force.

Is there something in my tranny that has jarred loose? I never pulled it to do the swap. I never even pulled the drivelines. All those stayed in place and I just bolted up the engine when it was done.

TIA

Clint

on my truck.. 5.7 vortec, GM flywheel, centerforce clutch and pp. I use the slave cylinder from the 86 model FJ60 but the slave rod from one of the earlier trucks (adjustable rod). Only way to get mine to work somewhat right. My clutch releases with the pedal just an inch or two from the floor. Which is apparently normal on these setups FYI I'm running Mark's Adapter if that adds to the mix. FYI. My friend adusted the clutch and it seems as if going by experience is as much help as the crazy instrucstions from AA. I'm using the standard clutch fork ( OEM on my 86). Other parts are either stock or part of the AA package that comes with the Marks stuff.

after digging around today it looks like I may have two problems. One may be that the disc is stuck to the flywheel. teh second one may be that I have the wrong pressure plate and need a lower profile one from an early chevy. I really dont think its a throw issue.

My pressure plate is early Chevy, diaphragm type, been working fine for nine years. I don't know why the plate would stick to the flywheel unless you inadvertently got grease on it or something but that seems unlikely since its new.

Looks like I had everything installed is it should be. I actually had a defective pressure plate. Put in a new kit from a mid 90's chevy 1/2 V6 and it works great.

Good to hear! I knew you'd get it figured out. And you have 4 days to spare!

That's great news! I was going to get the tow straps ready and just pull you down the trail :D

4 days to spare and everyone of them will be full with all the "other" stuff that I should have done last week!

I wouldn't go putting away the strap just yet! :p

Clint,

Disregard for other post on the clutch issue...CONGRATULATIONS!

I took my swap on a trial by fire the weekend after mine was mostly finished too. No big issues. Go for it.

I fixed my clutch rattle also - Bad pilot bearing. What can you do about bad/wrong parts.

I did a 600 mile southern Utah trip in the same week that I installed the 350. Nothing leaked, it ran well, so off I went! One of my more memorable trips actually.
