Alright.... this has my panties in a bunch.

Do I need an extra cross member under the transmission in this configuration?

350 mounted up with AA engine mounts, followed by a 700R4, then a Marlin Toybox, and finally a stock '77 Transfer case with AA rear crossmember.

TIA,

Jim

Edit:

If so, does anyone have any pictures of what they fabbed up that they can share?

If it were my build, I would utilize the mounting provision in the bottom of the toybox, instead of using the AA mount on the rear of the transfer case.

No, I do not have pictures of doing this.

Sorry.

Howdy! Would be factory transmission mount position work? It would be a little closer to 1/2 between the 2 mounts you have now. With a doubler, I would think about all that torque your going to be putting on the driveline. John

I've struggled with a couple revisions of a crossmember using a standard urathane tranny mount without any success. (the reason for asking)

X2, I made a crossmember to support my ToyBox!

I would personally add a crossmember, especially while you have it apart. How short is your rear driveshaft? I would think it would be tough to get that long of a drivetrain under an fj40? did you move the rear axle back? what will be your end crawl ratio? sorry for all the questions, just curious, as I have thought of going to an auto tranny but every config I came up with ended up being either too long or not low enough geared.

Engine was placed forward, but allowed for conventional water pump and clutch fan assembly.

Rear driveshaft is 18 inches.

Rear springs are flipped to gain 3 inches

End crawl ratio is about 80:1

why not just incorporate a stout custom skid plate?

Skid plate will be there eventually, but I need to get this crossmember thing done first. I briefly thought of combining the two together, but dumped that idea after remembering all the skidplates that I've seen over the years that end up warped up into the belly after repeated bashings.

Sean,
I noticed you removed the rear x-member to allow the drivetrain to fit. Did you replace it further back? Or is the tranny support functioning as a x-member? Does that provide sufficient strength to the frame? I am getting ready to make a similar modification to mine and pondering what to do with the x-member.

Tks....

Not pretty, but it works!

Using that as a replacement. As I stated, I may do something else later, but for now, it works!;)

Well, here's the final solution. I needed to get something done so that I could pick up the body from the paint shop.

Seth-O, I hacked out my crossmember as well. The tube you see in my pictures is something I added.

There has got to be another part between that crossmember and the box. Sean, can you post a shot of that item?

Hmmm, thought I posted a reply to this earlier this evening!

Remember, the ToyBox is basically a mini p/u tcase housing, so you need one of these....

Marlin sells them, about half way down the page...

Marlin Crawler : Transfercase Accessories

Here is another option over on the vendor board...
